Thanks
I Googled that up and found ATAPWD 1.2 is on the Hi___'s boot CD.
(When you boot from the CD it's under DOS tools)
So I tried that, but it did not see the hard drive

Sorry I did not realize that was warez

Thanks for the replies fellas
I was able to get 2 drives working by trying to format them with a Win XP CD (that has sata drivers added)
2 Hitachi drives are giving me trouble, each sata 250 GB, I try to test them with "Hitachi Drive Fitness Test boot CD" and the program says "Device is password protected and can not be tested"
I also tried dban boot CD on one and it ran for 4 hours with less than 1% being complete. So I quit it.
Any ideas ?
Thanks,
Craig from Maine

Hello from Maine,
I have some hard drives that were formerly in a striping raid array. I am not able to use them as single drives now.
I tried to bring them back to life with Acronis Disk Director program, but no luck.
How can I get these drives going again ?
Thanks!
Craig

By the way, is there anyway to use XP explorer in Vista and Win7 ?

You mean the shutdown tracker? I believe there is a group policy setting to turn that off.
Oh thanks, I found instructions :

Most X86 app aren't able to address more than 4GB (2^32) of memory (like the system) and by default the system won't allow any process to use more than 2GB of memory. Only X64 applications running on an X64 os can use correctly memory over 4GB. The few exceptions are servers applications like MS SQL server....
That's good to know thanks
I guess I'll need to go 64bit !

So for example, MAME32 and QUAKE 3 ARENA couldn't enjoy 32 GB of RAM in Windows Enterprise 2003 ?
Am I forced to go with Windows Vista and Windows 7 ? I miss the XP style windows explorer

oops can someone move this to the Nlite forum (doh!)

Hello from Maine
I like XP SP3 I make it skinny with Nlite then pump it up with driverpacks.
But XP has a 4 GB ram limit, so I've been tinkering with Windows 2003 Enterprise which can use a whopping 64 GB of RAM, apparently.
So far I have it Nlite'd and tweaked to resemble Windows XP, but when I go to shut it down there is a big procedure I don't like.
Can I slipstream a faster shutdown routine into Win 2003 using Nlite ? Or modify it somehow ?
Thanks!

OK, I shrunk the content enough to fit on a CD and sure enough it boots in the problematic computer
Apparently some old bios will not accept DVD as a bootable media, only CD.
0 -
Thanks I'll try that
I am glad to know there isn't a specific component I am removing that is causing the problem
edit :
well, just burning the DVD with Nlite did not solve the problem
I can only deduce that some older computer's bios are only willing to boot CD and not DVD
I'll try making another XP with driverpacks but no video, sound, and 3rd party drivers (those are pretty big) in an effort to fit it on a CD

Disclaimer : Personal use only, I obey every law without question, I respect every dictator, I am a mindless consumer.
Anyway, I am using Nero to burn the disks.
Come to think of it, maybe I should try to fit it on a CD and maybe I should try burning it with Nlite (?)
I guess I should have tried that before posting LOL
But the DVDs I make do work on most computers, that's why it's funky.
OK thanks, Craig

Hello from Maine,
I make a nice skinny XP SP3 with driverpacks, I really like it.
Most computers will boot it, but occasionally I get a real rebellious computer that will boot a factory XP SP2 CD, but not a burned Nlite'd DVD. And yes these are DVD rom drives LOL.
What am I removing that is causing this ? Are there any removable components that aid in a bios accepting the disk as a boot source ?
Thanks,
Craig

Hello from Maine,
I have a stripped XP installed on a computer and everything is all set, lots of software ect. Except I need to have ACPI added back, I think.
I found a script that adds "smart card" back to an Nlite'd XP - I wonder if there is one for ACPI ?
Please advise me
Thank you,
Craig

godfromdfo, you say you're going to upload that? I'd like to take a look. How did you make it?
Thanks,

It's interesting to compare your own moderately nLited and rarely reinstalled system to the really hardcore barebones-systems.
I don't understand this statement. Please elaborate.
RAM usage doesn't even come close, but then again the more RAM you've got the more it will use. Doing a fresh install will probably help a bit.Fresh install ? This is a fresh install.
Regarding RAM : It's true, the more RAM you have the more will be used. Here is a pic showing all different amounts of RAM and their usage:
About the number of processes:For XP you should definitely get below 30, even for Vista you should hover around that mark.
But it depends on your hardware too, if it needs some drivers/progs to be running (=using a process of their own) at all time you may have to get by with a few more (mostly for laptops).
My very functional setup has 13 processes including taskmgr, going lower will make you lose some functionality (my temporary gaming setup has 11). Below 10 (excluding taskmgr) is not possible unless you kill Explorer too.
Groovy, care to upload your lastsession ? I would take a look at that. Since I've made a skeletonized XP for the arcade computers I was thinking of making a slim one for the regular desktop computers, but I don't know how.
Cheers,
Craig

...
P.S.- Can you give us a better look at your system (specs, boot time [generalization], etc.)? It would be interesting to see where your system stands .
Thanks for the peeps and info.
I use virtual PC to test my ISOs but the good ones make it to CD. I tried this OS on a Pentium 3, 700mhz, with 192 MB RAM and 30 GB HDD. Also a cheapy AGP video card. Ram usage was about 40. Boot time, though I did not use a stop watch, seemed like 20 seconds from power button to desktop, that's including the RAM count. MinLogon is blazing fast.
Mala is a frontend for MAME, the arcade game emulator. This tiny OS is just for arcade machines. Mala launches automatically at boot.
Cheers,
Craig

I used to be able to get XP gold (no service packs) down to about 28MB using XPlite.
That's good
I was able to get Win98se down to 15 MB of RAM usage.
But I am more interested in using XP SP3 than older software. The compatibility and stability of the most recent software is the whole point of using XP SP3 rather than DOS, 98, Linux, ect.
For example, I'm bet I could get DOS down to 3 MB RAM usage (with drivers and everything) but it's not "out of the box" compatible with USB ThumbDrives and not compatible with driverpacks. Hardly and software and driver support.
I put an "optimized" 98se computer in my brother-in-laws arcade machine, eventually the OS completely broke (after about a year). I just re-did it with this custom XP SP3, we'll see how long it runs stably. I am confident it will just work and work, no problem.
In my experience, old software on new machines can be tricky.
Cheers,
Craig

I don't know if it would help you, but have you tried Emerge Desktop?
Phil
Thanks for the tip, though it didn't work. Apparently it requires some component from windows that I already removed in Nlite. I don't think it's a completely standalone program.
If your target is lowest possible memory use then some replacement may be nessecary. But yeah, I know what you mean.
I'm not quite sure what taskman needs to work, I think some service had to be running.
Did you try opening it with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Esc, since Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work with Minlogon.
But you could try using Process Explorer instead.
OK, thanks for the tip. Here are the screen shots from Process Explorer.

How many processes do you have with that config? An image of the processes tab in taskman would be nice to see.
To temporalily get even lower you could kill explorer too.
Wasn't there some project where someone had managed to remove the GUI (replace it with a commandline-interface) to make it extremely slim?
Oh yeah, that rings a bell, there are "alternative shells", alternative to explorer that is. But what good is windows without explorer? We may as well all use Linux. Isn't explorer what Windows is all about? I tried one of those shells before, a while back, it didn't knock my sox off.
As for taskman - mine doesn't work. I stripped too much apparently. What are taskman's dependencies ? Can I just drop it into my Nlite windows from my actual windows ?
Thank you,
Craig

Hello from Maine,
I was super pumped to get an XP down to 40 MB of RAM usage out of 196, but I really have nothing to compare it to. How low did you get yours ?
Thanks,
Craig

It would help if you showed what services & processes you had running. Try disabling all but the core services :
Event Log
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Windows Audio
Make sure you know what you are doing if you decide to do this...
Thanks for the reply. As for services : I removed all services in Nlite. I integrated MinLogon and driverpacks. Here are the services I have running:
Thanks,
Craig

Hello from Maine,
I have managed to get XP down to 40 MB of RAM usage, this OS is for an arcade machine and works excellent for it's purpose, but I wonder if I can get it lower.
Any tips?
I have attached my lastsession.ini
Thank you,
Craig
