Hi, In the 'datasheet' view of Access, does anyone know how to insert a new row - at an arbitrary place, not at the end? I have searched help and feel quite gloomy that it isn't possible. Cheers, Sky

Sorry; try "^" instead of ** And don't forget the cell numbers, i.e. "=(a14*b14)^3
-
Hang in there! ** means 'to the power of'. Putting "=a*b**3" into column C makes Excel do the calculation (contents of A) times (contents of B to the power 3) and stick the result in column C. Try it... I have to go about in 10 minutes but if you like, send me an email later and we can continue to talk lke aliens! ;}}
-
It's "=a*b**3". It's very similar to ordinary algebraic (ro rather, Fortran) notation. Scientists are from Mercury... ;}}
-
Well, then it's "=a*b**3" Or, if what you need is a superscript 3, then highlight the 3, go into format cells, font, then choose superscript.
-
Hmm, confused. There's no difficulty entering this as either text or numbers... Do you mean you want to enter numbers into columns A and B and have the result appear in col C? If so, then in Col C you type "=A*B" (without the quotes).

Anyoen know how to merge cells in one dimension but not the other?
skylark53 replied to skylark53's topic in Microsoft Office
Didn't know I had! Where? -
I have a horrible Excel worksheet sent to me by some surveyors. The cells have been merged in row pairs right across the 30 columns, i.e. ------------------- ------------------- ------------------- has become ------------------- ------------------- The columns are unmerged. Question: is there a way to recombine the row pairs right across the document WITHOUT also merging the columns... Thanks!

Thanks, cluberti and ponch. I've made a bookmark to paint.net. Meanwhile, there is indeed a box in Seamonkey (was 'vanilla Mozilla'; still simply the smallest/fastest/best browser available), under 'appearance', that lets you "resize large images to fit the browser window". Not exactly what I'm after -will try paint- but works a treat! Ta muchly! Alison

Thanks, spacesurfer. I'll give that a shot!

Is there any MS program that opens an image file so that it's properly scaled? My problem is that whatever I try (windows picture & fax viewer, mozilla, seamonkey, I.E.) opens the picture so that it's huge, with all the pixels visible and only part of it visible at a time; you have to pan around (an ear here, a nostril there...). What I want is for jpgs, & gifs to open so that their screen size suits the resolution. E.g. for a standard quality image this would be about 8" x 6". For a lower resolution, portrait-shape picture it might be 2" x 4". Ideally it'd be some free software, maybe even something that's already on the system. But I don't see anything in "properties\opens with"... Thanks!

I have selected various toolbars I want to see every time I open a particular file in Word. Even ANY file would do. But no matter that I've set them up and saved the file, the same bloody set of (unwanted) toolbars keeps reappearing every time I open it. I think I am going to bite somebody, possibly a client. This is MS Word 2003, Service Pack 2, if that's relevant. Thanks for help...

Hi there Punto, I have "group similar tasks" set both at home and work. Yet I get separate Excel windows at home, but all files in one window at work. O/S at home is XP home, at work it's XP Pro. Sky

Hi Bannor, Thanks for your thoughts! What I want to do is use Explorer to go to the folder where I have my .xls, and when I click on each file, I want it to open in its own Excel window. At the moment, 2 or more files open as separate "sheets" in the same window. Suppose you have 2 speadsheets open. To see file 2, you have first to collapse file 1 to a little bar at lower left of the Excel window, at whch point you see the other little bar representing file 2. You then click on "maximise" and file 2 expands to fill the window. It's a real pain. Sky

How do you open files Excel files in separate windows? I've been through Options and Help, to no avail. At home, when I open two (or more) Excel spreadsheets they each appear in their own window, so it's easy to compare/ cut & paste etc. But not here at work, though I can see nothing diffrent in the setup. Puzzlement, frustration! Thanks..... Sky

Am adding a single data point 19 months after the last plotted point of a 1-year sequence of monthly data. Question is, how do I introduce a break (sometimes depicted with //) in the x-axis to remind the reader that these data have a gap in them? I also do not want to join this last point on to the other 12. That is, I want to 12 to be joined up, but not the 13th. Cheers, Alison

How do you open a Works file, type .wps? I've tried changing the file type to .doc, .rtf and .txt -- all to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not, of course, have MS Works. Thanks!

Shut down Messenger when Outlook 2003 is open

Does anyone have any suggestions for this one? No replies at all so far... -
I am running XP Professional. The system tray always contains the little Windows Messenger icon, with a cross beside it because we don't have messenger (or don't have an account). Question is, is it possible to shut it down or disable it in 'settings' so that it doesn't fire up? I haven't found a way to get rid of it while Outlook 2003 is running. I like a tidy system tray. ;} Thanks!
