Yes, I know. But Zone Alarm free does not let you to forward ports. It lets you only specify applications that should go through.

Thanks. The link you sent is dead: The message you are trying to access has been deleted. Please update your bookmarks. The free ZA does not allow port forwarding.

Turns out that after i created the new account on the xp laptop and rebooted, forgot that ZoneAlarm started and that caused the network path not to be found. With ZA off I was able to add the network port to the Vista laptop and I can now print. So now the question is how can I configure ZA to let me print, otherwise I have to stop it each time I want to print. I could not find any info on how to do that. Any ideas? Incidentally, there is conflicting info on whether both hardware and software firewalls should be on. Some say the router's is enough, others say it's safer to have both, as they do different things.
-
I did create the account and now when I try to add the port to the printer I get: The network path was not found.
-
They are both on the same workgroup. So if there is an user X with password Y on the Vista computer and I add the same user X with password Y on the XP computer, this should work?

I have a home network of two laptops which share an internet access wirelessly via a 2Wire router. One runs Windows 2000 and has a HP Deskjet 5850 printer connected via a USB cable; the other runs Vista. I have enabled File and Printer sharing on the 2000 computer and checked all the network setting on the Vista, and they seem OK. I installed the substitute Vista driver for the printer (5600) on the Vista laptop as per HP instructions and now am trying to set it up to print off the remote printer. Based on instructions received from users that made this work I do the following: Control Panel|Printers|5600 Properties|Ports|Add port|Local port|New Port|\\computername\printername where computername and printername are the names on the network respectively. I then get: Logon Failure: Unknown user name or incorrect password I read all the info on the Net about this error and found nothing that pertains to my situation, or that solved the problem. Please advise. Thanks.

the problem is that the creation of a XPlite disc must be done from an installed x64 system, so you must install full xp64 to create the XPLite, then install the latter. too much hassle. however, I was able to apply the sp2 to xp64 from x86 via the command line as posted earlier, and then it turned out that Integrator worked too within x86 and applied all hotfixes. It also appears that nLite does not refuse to work on the slipstreamed copy anymore, so I am gonna try to use it to streamline xp, add drivers, tweak and write the CD.
-
I am confirming that the method you referred me to works. I copied the the update binaries from the x86 sp2 to the x64 sp2 and used the update /integrate command and it slipstreamed SP2 into XP64. So now I need a way to slipstream the hotfixes in a x86 environment. Integrator and nLite must be run in a x64 environment to splistream the x64 version of xp. The VM option is too much hassle. Perhaps I there is a kind soul who runs x64 to whom I can upload my CD files, have him integrate the hotfixes and email me back the finished version. I can't say I like to burden another with this though.
-
Thanks, but i don't understand what he did. Both SP's are EXE archives. In order for his method to work you have to copy the UPDATE folder from one such archive to another. When I tried this with 7-zip, it said "Such interface is not supported". I don't know how he could integrate with nLite using the files, because they don't work like the EXE archives of the SPs.
-
Can you pls elaborate? Or is it too complicated to bother with?
-
I am puzzled by this: the whole point of slipstreaming is to install an updated OS. But if I already have a 64 OS installed, the usefulness is only in the future IF I ever must reinstall the OS. Slipstreaming from a 32 OS would be much more useful because one would have a 32 OS installed prior to the 64 OS. Isn't that possible technically, or what? Thanks.

Buna, Hhhmmm, would that happen if by mistake I checked the Test option? because that's the only way this could have happened? The other question I have is how do I stop nLite from copying the source CD again when I go back into it? How can I go in directly and have it just write the CD from the slipstreamed copy already available from last run? Multumesc. FP

I produced a WinLite CD from a disc of Windows 2K Professional. But when I tried to Open it to inspect the content I get: Drive not accessible incorrect function When I check the drive Properties of the drive in My Computer, the Used, Free and Total space show as 0 bytes and the pie image shows as full. This error has been discussed a lot on the Net, but I have yet to see one convincing explanation or solution.
-
Well, I tried and it did not work. I created the first recovery disc, which has the I386 folder and other XP files on it. But when I point nLite to it, it does not recognize them. If anybody knows a way to work around this problem, pls let me know.

Another question: What about the disc which upgrades from XP Home to XP Prof? It costs only about $30. Can it be nLited for a full Prof install CD?
-
Lenovo laptops have a recovery/rescue partition and do not come with OS discs. However, it is possible to get XP prof discs for something like $70. They are likely customized for their laptops, though. Is it possible to nLite those discs and is the result generic enough to install and run on any computer? Or is it safer to get a generic copy of XP Prof? Is it still available? Any idea how much it costs as an upgrade from Win2000? Thanks.

There were 2 problems: The instructions Vorck gave about it is not very clear. They create the impression that the file is on the Windows CD and you extract it from there and put it in the SOURCE directory. That is not the case. Then, even though SP4 was in the SOURCE directory, the identification file was NOT created by HFSLIP. This was solved when I went pure nLite. Too bad there is a bunch of fixes it does not do.
-
In fact, the only ident file I am aware of is CDROMSP4.TST, whose use is not clear from Vorck instructions. This file is not on the Windows CD as he says. I found it on the Net and did put it in the root and I got the problem I described. After several attempts with HFSLIP, I went and did the whole thing with nLite and it looks like I got a good CD. The only thing is there are a bunch of fixes which HFSLIP digests but nLite rejects, so I will have to apply them manually after the OS install. A pain, but c'est la vie.

A third attempt to burn directly created a non-bootable CD
-
Hi, I have followed very carefully Fred Vorck's instructions on HFSLIP (did not use his files because I did not want to delete IE). I then used nLite on the resulting SOURCESS file to streamline Windows 2000. I made two attempts to create a bootable CD: 1. Direct burn on a Windows 2000 system: this created a CD which booted alright but then issued the following prompt instead of continuing with the Windows installation. Please insert the disk labeled Service Pack 4 CD into Drive A: 2. ISO burn on a Windows XP system: I reran HFSLIP, created an ISO image with nLite, but when I tried to burn it, it seemed like it was doing it, but I ended up with a CD which seems empty when I open it, but which nLite says it cannot be written on because it's NOT empty. When I nsert the CD in another computer, the system does not see it, it sees the drive empty. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. FP

Thanks. I was able to burn directly a CD with nLite which boots ok, but then asks to: Please insert the disk labeled Service Pack 4 CD into Drive A: instead of continuing with the Windows installation. I wonder why? Could it be because of the CDROMSP4. TST file, which I never thought was necessary, but there is some confusion about it at the Vorck site.
-
one more question: is it ok to run nlite on a winxp system to streamline the win2k cd, or must it be run on a win2k system? i was planning to run it on my older win2k system, but it does not have .NET and i cannot install .NET on it.

I bought a Lenovo R61 that came with XP Pro preloaded and no disc. I don't much care for XP and intend to migrate it to Win2000 for which I have a disc. My plan is to use HFSLIP to slipstream the hotfixes and obtain a SOURCESS file on which to apply nLite to get rid of crappola. Questions: 1. Can I run nLite on a Windows 2000 system to streamline a Windows 2000 bootable disc? 2. The HFSLIP process produces an ISO image to burn at the same time it produces SOURCESS. If I then apply nLite to SOURCESS will nLite permit me to produce a new ISO image to burn to disc, or will it burn to disc directly, without producing an ISO? Thanks.

Thanks. Do you know if they replace any previous fix and if so, which? regards, fp

Today Windows Update prompted me to install these two IE updates. But as far as I can tell, these are for all Windows EXCEPT 2000, and I am not even sure they are new. And I have been current with all updates until now. Anybody has any ideas about this? Thanks.
