  1. Has anyone noticed that Youtube has officially gone HTML5 as of today or yesterday?

On one of my win-98 systems, I can't play youtube videos with FF 2.0.0.20.

But on another system - I can. I apparently have flash 10,3,183,86 installed.

Youtube videos stopped working for me a few weeks. I'm using FF 3.6.28, Flash Player 10.2.159 and Flashblock 1.5.17.

What annoys me is that the videos that I'm interested (old songs) would work fine except I can no longer click on the Flashblock 'f' to get them started. I've tried Vlc and that crashed. Is there any solution?

  2. I've just upgraded from FF 2.0.0.20 to 3.6.28 (using KernelEx 4.5.2).

If I click on a link in Outlook Express or double-click on an HTML file and FF is not running, FF 3.6.28 starts up and displays the link or file correctly. However, if FF 3.6.28 is already running nothing happens.

    Is there a solution?

  3. Thanks for the links, but they won't work for me. The old computer is a Z80 machine running CP/M.

All I need is a prog to read a file and output all the bytes to COM1, without adding or deleting any. I'm really annoyed with HyperTerminal. Maybe I should look for an alternative, but I don't need stuff like Telnet or dial-up connections as the two machines are only three feet apart.

  4. I'm trying to send files to an old computer through a serial link connected to COM1 on my Win98SE PC. It should be dead easy, no? Well, I'm having a lot of trouble. The physical link works perfectly and the old computer is receiving all the bytes it is being sent without any errors. The problem is that the apps I've tried either add extra bytes or delete bytes. I want to send binary files so it is vital that the file is sent exactly as it is, with no extras and nothing missing.

Things I have tried so far:

    1. Adding Generic / Text Only printer on COM1:

Printing files to this printer results in lots of unwanted bytes added to the data stream. Is there any way to tell the printer driver to send the raw data and nothing else? Choosing RAW in Spool Settings does not help.

    2. HyperTerminal

For Transfer -> Send Text File, HT does not send CR+LF properly. The LF is stripped and only CR is sent. A LF without a preceding CR is sent fine. If I do File -> Properties -> Settings -> ASCII Setup, then select Send line ends with line feeds, CR+LF are sent properly. However, this creates a new problem: CR with no LF are converted by HT into CR+LF, which is all right for text files but useless for binary files.

    3. Redirecting file output in DOS

The COM1 device does not work in DOS7 nor DOS6.22, so I need a Win98 solution.

I wrote a tiny little program about 60 bytes long on the old computer to receive all the serial bytes. Everything works fine at that end. I can't believe it is so difficult at the PC end. Is there some free utility that will do the job? Thanks for any help.

  5. I sent a PM to diskless, who had a post in this forum, where he said he copied and pasted both the NPSWF32.dll and flashplayer.xpt files and got Flash Player 9.0.262.0 installed successfully. I want to get all the details from him.

Of course, now I know to ask him if he had a Pentium II or a Pentium III. LOL !

    larryb123456

Hello larryb123456, my PC is a Pentium III 800Mhz, so the trouble I had (now solved as I described here) is not the same as yours.

  6. VID order is not mandatory, AFAIK.

But if you have time for it, please do revise the usbstor.inf, for there are other items out of VID order, zip and attach it.

    Usbstor.inf sorted! :) Here it is: usbstor110d.7z

All relevant entries listed in VID order. Not mandatory, but logical.

How often is the Native USB file in post 1 updated? If latest usbstor.inf were included, other poor souls with Win98 and Yoo Move players would have to install NUSB only.

Look for USBVIEW.EXE v. 5.1.2600.2180 at MDGx's. It runs OK both on 9x/ME and XP, and allows one to determine VIDs and PIDs, if that's what you're looking for. HTH.

    Thanks! :thumbup

    idVendor = VID

    idProduct = PID

  7. I have managed to get the Yoo Move 1802TS MP3 Player working with Win98SE. The required additions to USBSTOR.INF are shown at the end of this message.

Way to go, diskless! You rock! :thumbup

Here's the updated usbstor.inf, for those who wish to test it.

Thanks for that, dencorso. Strictly speaking, all the Yoo entries should be placed between the Imation and SanDisk entries, to preserve the VID order.

I forgot to say a huge thank you earlier to maximus-decim for creating the Native USB Drivers in the first place.

Is there any free USB analyser software that works with Win98SE?

  8. I have managed to get the Yoo Move 1802TS MP3 Player working with Win98SE. The required additions to USBSTOR.INF are shown at the end of this message. Perhaps they could be added to the download file?

Not knowing much about it, I assumed USBSTOR_BULK is correct for following Interface Descriptor:

    bLength, 0x9

    bInterfaceNumber, 0x0

    bAlternateSetting, 0x0

    bNumEndpoints, 0x2

    bInterfaceClass, 0x8 (Mass Storage)

bInterfaceSubClass, 0x6 (SCSI Transparent Command Set)

    bInterfaceProtocol, 0x50 (Bulk-Only Transport)

    iInterface, 0x0

;Might work for other Yoo Move devices

    ;Usage:

;1. Install Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers first

;2. Modify %windir%\INF\USBSTOR.INF file as below

;3. Connect USB cable from PC to Yoo Move device

;4. Two new Removable Disk drives now ready to use

;Add Yoo entry to [Manufacturer] section

    %Yoo.Mfg%=Yoo

;Add new Yoo section and entry

    [Yoo]

  9. I installed nusb33e (see above) because I've just bought a Yoo Move 1802TS MP3 player. The manual says a driver is needed for Win98SE, but unfortunately the necessary driver is not included on the install CD. The retailer said contact manufacturer, which I did but without reply. The Yoo Digital website says the device does not support Win98SE whereas it states clearly on the box that it does.

Rest of message deleted. Please see next post.

  10. Backup before installation of nusb33e

I needed to install nusb33e, but before I did so I backed up the files that I thought would be overwritten using Scanreg. For more details, please see below. Procedure could be modified quite easily for other backups. Comments welcome. Should I have added more files to Files section? Or removed some which do not get overwritten?

  11. I've just downloaded and installed a prog which uses dx7vb.dll or dx8vb.dll. Unfortunately the prog crashes with invalid page faults.

    Below is part of dxdiag.txt:

    dx7vb.dll: 4.09.0000.0900 English Final Retail 12/12/2002 00:14:32 602112 bytes
    dx8vb.dll: 5.03.2600.2180 English Final Retail 8/3/2004 22:56:44 1227264 bytes

As the DirectX version is 9.0c, why is there no dx9vb.dll? Does it use dx8vb.dll instead?

The version of dx8vb.dll I have now is for XP SP2. Should I have dx8vb.dll 4.09.000.0900? I have a backup of dx7vb.dll in \windows\sysbckup, but not dx8vb.dll. What is the best way to get the right version of dx8vb.dll?

Thanks a lot in advance for all replies.

  12. Old versions of PC-cillin can be downloaded from

    http://www.trendmicro.com/Download/legacy.asp

Later versions than 2002 are available.

Would it be best to use PC-cillin 2005? Or is 2002 the best?

I was aware that there are later versions of PC-cillin that support Windows 98, I assume PC-cillin 2005 is the last one that does.

I haven't tried any later versions simply because I don't have licences for them! <snip>

    :)

    Thanks.

Which Spyware Pattern do you use?

I don't know what CPR, DCT and OPR mean.

  13. I still use Trend PC-cillin 2002 (version 9.06) on my dual boot (98SE/XP) machine, and it still works fine.

I haven't had automatic virus pattern updates for years, but I download and install the latest pattern files from Trend's site manually and they still install and work fine.

I don't know how much longer for of course!

    :)

  14. For a couple of days now, Windows Media Player (version 9.00.00.3349) has added a black horizontal band about 100 pixels high when playing videos. Depending on the skin, the black band is either at the bottom or split between top and bottom. I don't know why this black band suddenly appeared. Is there an easy way to get rid of it?

WMP9 is set to play only asf, avi, wma, and wmv files. Is there some replacement for WMP that could play these, so I could get rid of WMP completely?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

  15. I now have Flash Player 9.0.262.0 installed successfully. :D

    I manually copied NPSWF32.dll and flashplayer.xpt from

    the installation folder (\Windows\System\Macromed\Flash) to

    the Firefox plugins folder (\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins)

then FF recognized the plugin the next time it was started.

    Thanks for the replies.

  16. Following this same logic, I wonder if it is possible to use the same method on 98SE to defeat some sites that already want you to upgrade to Flash 10?

Probably. Which sites do you have in mind? If I can reproduce the problem, I can test myself, so I can develop a workaround (if there is one) faster...

Please try the BBC News website, for example:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8644758.stm

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8643375.stm

Flash videos stopped working on this website a few months ago with Win98SE + Firefox 2.0.0.20 + Flash Player 9.0.246.0

I'd like to get them going again. Thanks!

  17. XMS RAMDisks take up System Arena Space as does the File Cache. Exceeding a few hundred Megabytes is likely to crash unless you lower your MaxFileCache Setting. A 1GiB XMS RAMDisk is impossible.

Yes, you are quite correct and I've edited my previous post. I've had an XMSDSK RAM drive of over 800MB working properly with 1GB total RAM, as mentioned in an earlier post.

I don't know whether people with lots of installed RAM (> 1GB) have given up using XMSDSK because of problems they may have had. To avoid these, MaxFileCache must be defined in [vcache] section of System.ini and, very importantly, run ScanDisk with Thorough test to make sure all the clusters on the RAM drive are actually there.

  18. Adding more RAM is the best thing you can do to improve performance. The location of the swap file is more important than the size. In my experience, Win98SE doesn't utilise large amounts of RAM properly (I don't know whether ME is any different) so it would be better to use most of it as a RAM drive using XMSDSK. I have 512MB of RAM and 384MB is a RAM drive. You could try a ~800MB RAM drive (depending on your motherboard - please see here). Once you have created your RAM drive, you could put the following things on it:

    1. Swap file

    2. Temporary files

    3. Browser cache

    4. Command.com

    5. Registry

And if you really want things to fly:

    6. Rest of Windows files (in a compressed drive)

And if you have space left over:

    7. Apps (in a compressed drive)

Windows running on a RAMdrive is amazingly fast! :)

  19. Wouldn't adding an entry for XMSDSK in IOS.INI solve the compatibility mode problem? See IOS.INI TWEAKS, it is the second tip, just below CD-ROM/DVD MAX SPEED... Whatever the result, please keep us posted on it.

    interesting.

    might be worth a try.

This will not help because there is no protected-mode version of XMSDSK to replace the 16-bit version (no xmsdsk.vxd). Would it be possible to have an xmsdsk.vxd? I don't know, but there isn't one and the RAM drive is still very fast in compatibility mode.

  20. I've done some tests to find out more about the relationship between XMSDSK, MaxFileCache and the number of simultaneous DOS windows. Here are the results:

    Motherboard = Intel D201GLY2

    Total system RAM = 1GB

IGD Aperture Size = 128MB Minimum possible (AGP Aperture)

IGD Share Memory Size = 32MB Minimum possible (Video RAM)

    OS = Win98SE

Memory map for top 1 GB:

E000 0000 - EFFF FFFF System board extension for ACPI BIOS

    FEC0 0000 - FEC0 0FFF System board extension for ACPI BIOS

    FEE0 0000 - FEE0 0FFF System board extension for ACPI BIOS

FFF8 0000 - FFFF FFFF Unavailable for use by devices

Minimum XMSDSK = 264192 = 258MB. Windows will not boot with any less

    Maximum XMSDSK = 886784 = 866 MB

    Minimum MaxFileCache = 2048 = 2MB. Could use 1MB but no advantage

    Maximum MaxFileCache = 624640 = 610MB with minimum XMSDSK = 264192 = 258MB

    Maximum XMSDSK+MaxFileCache = 888832 = 868 MB. Only 1 DOS window possible

Address space per extra DOS window = 4MB Reduce XMSDSK+MaxFileCache accordingly

Maximum simultaneous DOS windows = 109 Limit, even if more address space available

    Notes

MaxFileCache must be defined when using XMSDSK with 1GB system RAM.

ScanDisk should be run with Thorough test to make sure all clusters on RAM drive work.

A different motherboard will produce different results.

    MaxPhysPage was undefined throughout.

I did not have 2GB RAM to test.
