  1. Thanks Bilar but as I said in my post, I cant use or access the ususal MMC or Group Policy or Gpedit parameters because I've presumably Vlite'ed out the primary service or component .............. so .............. what I am looking for is a Registy mod or Command line prompt that will do same. Anyone have an answer ? Ben
  2. Have had a chance to play and Vlite Server 2008. Its nice - quicker than Vista SP1 and around [at least] a %15 smaller ram footprint. One annoying thing though. I did a full Vlite strip and now I cant disable the Shutdown Event Tracker ? I cant access MMC. Gpedit.msc doesnt have the usual Disable Option. So, is there a direct Registry Setting I can modify / install or a Command Prompt I can run to get rid of it ? Mny thx. Ben
  3. Hi all For those who are, or have run Win Server 2008, how does it compare to Vista SP1 X32 .... specificially:- - does it boot any quicker ? - is its RAM footprint bigger or smaller ? - is it generally quicker / snappier to use ? - does it VLite smaller in terms of IS0 size and install size ? - any other benefits / drawbacks of Win Server 2008 'vs' Vista SP1 ? Thanks, Ben
  4. Hi nuhi Please, I intend no offence of any kind by asking this question, but am only doing so as I am planning to re-build and re-image my rig in the next few days ...... plus, I do know the current Vlite 1.1.1 is not yet even 3 weeks old ......but was wondering is your next Vlite update likely to issue in the next week or so ? If it will, I'll wait on my re-build, otherwise, I will very happily proceed with the current 1.1.1 version. Again, congratulations on such a fine product !!! Ben
  5. I *thought* the integrated Vista SP1 RTM DVD fully integrated versions would not be available until March ?!?! So is blerk saying that the above DVD's (i) have SP1 RTM fully integrated into them already (ii) are available to MSDN/MS Connect members *now* for download but that (iii) average joe users who do have licensed copies of Vista cant even get the standalone updater for another 2-4-8 weeks ? Or maybe, are these Vista DVD's simplyt the Vista DVD with the SP1 RTM file also copied onto it which then has to be run and installed ? Ben
  6. Thanks nuhi - looks like reverse engineering then as soon as SP1 RTM hits the servers. Having now read the how-to on the link you have on the front page, apart from taking some time, it actually seems quite straight forward nuhi, dont know if I imagined this, but did you say on another thread that you were looking to release another Vlite update in the next 24 hours or so, or is that my [hopeful] imagination ? All the best, Ben
  7. Hi all A quick question. Install Method A Lets say I D/L Vista SP1 RTM [when released] and then reverse engineer it, then burn a new install DVD and then install it on a fully clean hard disk. Install Method B Lets say I install Vista on a fully clean hard disk Then I D/L Vista SP1 RTM [when released]. Then I install Vista SP1. Install Method C Lets assume I have a M/S genuine Vista SP1 Factory DVD with SP1 fully integrated already - I dont have one but lets assume I do. I then install on a fully clean hard disk. My Question Putting aside the inconvenience factors, purely in terms of the final product that will rest on my hard disk, do all three Install Methods actually leave me with exactly the same installed product on my hard disk ? Thanks, Ben
  8. Hmmm .............just wondering ............... Assuming the article IS correct and it does go Final / RTM on Feb 4, does that mean it will be avaialble for download direclty from M/S at the same time / same day ? Ben
  9. Hi all ! Please see here:- http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=505 Assuming the report is right, the MS servers will be getting a hammering in a few days. Question for nuhi re: Slipstreaming Assuming MS release SP1 with the abiltiy to be slipstreamed [ ie: like the XP Service Packs can be slipstreamed with Nlite ] will the current 1.1 Vlite allow users to slipstream SP1 or would that require an update from your end ? All the best, Ben
  10. FWIW I just made a Vlite 1.1 Final disk with ALL storage controllers removed and just the Intel Chipset Driver integrated and it worked fine. I did a full clean format and install and it never asked for anything - 7 minutes - how good it that !!!!!!!!!!!! Booted from CD, chose format the c:, left the room, came back 7 minutes later and it was done. You are THE man nuhi !! Ben
  11. Hi nuhi ! Brilliant as always !!! nuhi, I'm going to do a fresh clean install onto a newly partitioned hard disk for a colleague. Nothing will be running in VM mode at all - its a Vlite Boot CD install onto a clean formatted fresh hard disk. As such, can I remove ALL the Storage Controllers provided I integrate into the Vlite Boot CD the Intel Chipset drivers [which load the core chipset and SATA/IDE drivers ] ? Thanks, Ben
  12. Hi nuhi As always, many many thanks to you !!! Re: the " new: Hide individual components (right-click menu) " Where is this exaclty ? / How exaclty do I acces this ? Thanks, Ben
  13. Thanks all. Gotta love the Internet - see here for the fix: http://www.48bitlba.com/enablebiglbatool.htm - get the fix here:- http://www.48bitlba.com/download/enablebig...nableBigLba.exe Just d/l it ............ installed in a micro-second.......... fix was instant .... re-booted and all works perfectly .... all drives and all sizes are now fully and correclty recognized in Win XP Sp0. My thanks again, Ben
  14. Hi Ponch ! Wow - I never knew that - thanks. Is there a single MS Hotfix that addresses this issue without having to install the full SP1 or the full SP2 ? Alternately, if I re-partition the 320gig hard disk to a 120gig partition + a 100gig partition + another 100gig partition, would that overcome my problem ? Thanks, Ben
  15. Hi all Am trying to do an NLite image and the following occurs:- - Windows XP [ original 2600 August 2001 build with no Service Packs or Hotfixes ] - 2 Hard Disks - C:\ is an 80gig SATA Primary O/S Drive D:\ is a 320gig SATA Secondary Data Drive already formatted to NTFS with nearly 250gig of data - Nlite 1.4.1 - pretty much a full %100 strip to core O/S functionality All works well. Except for one problem. Once installed, the system cant properly "see" my 2nd hard disk !?!?!? It see's my primary hard disk [80gig] no problems but does not correctly "see" my 2nd 320gig hard disk - the errors / problems thrown up are: - I click on the 320gig 2nd hard disk [ D:\ ] and Windows says it needs to be formatted - it doesnt as it already has a lot of backup files on it and has been in regular use for months no problems - in My Computer, under properties for this 320gig 2nd hard disk [D:\ ] it does not recognise the 320 gig and under the disk type, instead of NTFS which it is, it shows 0 bytes and something like RAW for the disk format Please see attached my relevant .INI file. Clearly, I have "over-removed" a key / critical Component, Option or Service. Can anyone please advise which key / critical Component, Option or Service I need to re-enable to overcome this problem. Many thanks, Ben MY_LAST_SESSION.INI
  16. Cool ... thanks all for the instructions. A quick question please.... ..... I understand that if I "remove" WinSXS the size of the produced .ISO wont change by much at all .... BUT ..... I assume that even though the .ISO file size wont change by much, the resulting installed Vlite'd installation will be close to 1 gig smaller because the WinSXS Directory [which in my case is ~ 1gig in size ] wont be installed ? Is my logic / expectation correct ? Thanks, Ben
  17. Hi nuhi Awesome of you yo do this for us for the holiday break !!!!!! One quick question please ...... how do I access / enable / expose the " extreme " items [of which WinSXS] is currenlty the only available option ? Many thanks again, Ben
  18. Hi nuhi Please dont be offended by this request, especially given that the current VLite 1.1 BETA 2 is only 4 1/2 weeks old, but given that the Christmas / New Year Holiday season is nearly here, I was wondering / hoping that you may be able to provide an update [no matter how small / minor] that we could play with over the break ? Again nuhi, I dont mean to be pushy at all, its just that ....... well...........simply put ...........Vlite is just such a fine piece of software. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am still stuned that MS have not (i) bought you and your software out for big bucks and (ii) given you a job on staff with mega-bucks !!!!!!!!!!!! Either way, keep up the great work and all the best for the holiday season. Ben
  19. For background - see here:- http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=720669 Then I found this:- http://chris123nt.com/2007/11/27/vistas-ua...ing-once-again/ The Registry Fix is:- hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\luafv reg_dword “start” The default value = 2 for reg_dword “start” - setting it 4 disables it completely Re-boot and guess what - memory footprint is at ~350 meg from as soon as Vista X64 SP1 RC boots up - none of this ~800meg ram footprint for a few minutes then dropping to ~350meg. Also, there is a LOT less hard disk activity once you are booted up. I always new UAC was a pain nuhi - is it too late for this to be in the next Vlite beta ? Many thanks, Ben
  20. Hi nuhi Windows Search is disabled - as are all other non-core-system services - as you say, disabling system services and disabling scehduled tasks definetly does NOT equal removal - thats the single best thing about Vlite. You can tweak Vista all you want but nothing you do will ever be as efficient as removing the actual components. nuhi .... beacuse its ......a single massive ram footprint drop of ~500meg ..... and becauses its fully repeatable ........ and beacasue it happens at the same time after boot up every time ....... and because it happens instantaneously and ......... the system is fuly idle ................... is there any specific component [or group of components] that spring to mind that may be causing this ? Reason I ask is that I'm thinking if there is a likely culprit, I might try Vlite'ing the X64 install before installing SP1 RC to see (i) if it still installs SP1 RC with this component removed and (ii) if it does, does it "overcome" this ram footprint dropping issue. Thanks Ben
  21. both off - am only running the basic / core system services needed to boot and run Vista - everything else is disabled ...... thats why I figure it must be a specific and large component .... Ben
  22. Hi all As slipstreaming is too much of a pain until Vista SP1 goes RTM - by which stage no doubt Vlite will allow for integration - I have done as follows:- - full clean Vista X64 install - no removals at all / no vliting at all - runs perfect - full clean SP1 RC update - runs perfect - set PageFile set to 3gig - runs perfect - I then disable ALL Scheduled Tasks and disable all but the critical 10 Services - runs perfectly Anyway, as I said, I do the above and all works perfectly .............. except for one bizzare thing ...... => I boot up => system goes into Vista SP1 RC GUI no problems => Ram foot-print / useage is ~850 meg => I let the system sit there and idle => after 2 min 30 sec the Ram foot-print DROPS in one hit and in an instant from ~850 meg to ~350 meg This is fully repeatable and happens every single time. So, my question is:- - does anyone have any idea what component is most likely causing this Ram behaviour ? Thanks, Ben
  23. Wow ..... I had read that SP1 made Vista a lot snappier and responsive and much quicker to boot-up, but thats great. 25sec <-> 30sec is really quick. Ben
  24. Just did a clean fully stripped Vlite 1.1 Beta2 with the Audio and Video driver loaded. My machine is a Intel Q6600 O/C to 4 x 3.6gig with 2 gig of DDR900 running at 1:1 with a SATA III 7200 Drive [non-RAID] My boot up time is as follows- => 0 second mark - Turn On PC => 22 second mark - Vista "green worm" / "progess bar" begins loading => 43 second mark - Vista GUI loaded and ready How does " 43 " seconds stack up ? [ From memory, my XP install on the same system takes around 25 seconds ] Ben
