  1. I am looking for some additional forums to register with. This is the best I have seen so far but I was just wondering if anyone was aware of any other quality forums for Windows or networking such as this one.
  2. I have a restore disk and that is helpful to get me back to where I was. Although, over time I learn more and implement more stuff that is not in the image. I then find myself feeling that my image is outdated. I want to start over and make a new image. I want the driver info backed up for that use. When I do have to start from scratch I would like my drivers backed up to make it easier to re-install them as opposed to doing each driver individually from floppy or CD.
  3. What is a forest? I mean you've got trees, Domain, Primary Domain Controller, Backup Domain Controller, sub domains, roots, tree roots, forest roots, and a partridge in a pear tree. What is the Hierarchical order to these items. Where do they fit in. I know that in NT there is the PDC first, but I get a little confused after that.Is it true that there are no Primary or backup domain controllers in 2000? They just use roots? I really don't have a clue what a forest is for. What circumstances or environment would necesitate a forest.
  4. I've always wondered, where are drivers located? On 98 and before, it seemed that they were located in 'c:windowssystem'. However they weren't always there. On 2000, is there a centralized location for drivers, Is there a way to back them up so if I reformat I can just replace all of the drivers at once instead of installing them individually from floppy or CD?
  5. Is it just me, or is Office 2000 better than XP? I have a friend that has XP and he says it looks cleaner and sleaker but is not really all that big. Think about it, Office 2000 comes on 2 Disks. Office XP is about half a disk. Many people have suggested that XP was an intermediary step until the next new big thing comes out. Kinda of like Windows ME was. Windows ME was something to sell between Windows 98 and Windows 2000. So it has frontpage...is thatit? What does XP really offer that 2000 doesn't?
  6. I have Win 2000 Server. I often like to reformat or restore my operating system. I always have to re-enter all of my users and groups back into my Active Directory. Is there a way to back up that information? Is there a file in which it is contained that I could burn to CD or floppy. Is there a way to export the list perhaps and then re-import it after I reformat and reinstall my operating system?
  7. I finally found it! It was my firewall, Blackice Defender. In BlackIce, if you got to 'tools -> Edit Blackice settings...', you will see a checkbox for: 'Allow NetBIOS Neighborhood' This has to be checked on all computers running Blackice. I am surprised more people do not have this problem because the program default is to have it unchecked. YEAH!
  8. I actually am running Black ice Defender on both computers. I know my router is not blocking any ports at all. Is it possible that Black Ice is preventing me from resolving the computer names. I have the security setting on Blackice set to 'allow all incoming traffic' on both boxes.
  9. OK Thanks. Wherever you think I will get the best feedback for my issue.
  10. I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew that my computers are Windows 2000 Professional. Any help you could offer would be a great help. Dave
  11. I have 2 computers using WIN 2000 Professional. For some reason they are not seeing each other in Network Neighborhood. The strange thing is, I am able to ping them by IP but not computer name, ie it will reply to 192.168.1.2 but will not reply using it's 'computer name' HAL9000. The 1st computer name is 'HAL9000' and the second computer name is 'SAL9000'. I know....stupid. Anyway, I cannot locate the computer by computer name. I can however find the computer if I search by IP. Start -> Find Files or Folders -> Computer Both are connected via a Linksys router. The Linksys router is connected to my cable modem. I have TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Networks on both computers. I have both computers set up as part of a workgroup named 'workgroup' Everyone agrees that my problem is a problem of name resolution. Some people think I may have a problem with WINS. I have spoken to just about anyone with no results. Does anyone have any idea what I might be missing.
