  1. Ok, I would be willing to go with RDRAM if it really makes that much of a difference.

My problem is, I have been EVERYWHERE and I can't find anywhere that reviews motherboards designed for the AMD Athlon or AMD Atlon XP. You would think that it would be easier, but I can't find out what chipset is best.

What about the KT333 chipset. Is out out and included in some currently available boards? If not, should I wait for it?

  2. I built all of my computers myself. I am very experienced with building and configuring computers.

I just am not sure which motherboard is going to give me the best compliment to the AMD Athlon XP. Did some of these boards make a chipset designed to interface with the AMD. I know ASUS made a board designed exclusively for the AMD Athlon. However that was a while ago and it probably isn't competitive with what has come out since.

  3. Ok I am going to go with the AMD Athlon XP 2000+.

What clock speeds are currently available?

I am not going to overclock. Why take the chance.

    Now the big question...the Motherboard.

This has always been the real issue for me.

I know that ASUS and ABIT make motherboards just for AMD. However I have heard from other people that there are other boards that outperform ASUS and ABIT. I have spent a lot of time finding reviews on AMD motherboards but there isn't really any boards that seem to be better than others. It's tough to find a good site that does extensive reviews of motherboards and maintains some sort of rating system. I like Tom's Hardware but they don't keep track of a personal rating system. You know like we think this board is best and then this is second.... that kind of thing.

I don't think I know what criteria I need to look for to make a decision on a board that is designed FOR THE AMD. Or maybe even designed just for the AMD ATHLON XP.

What boards do you think are best?

  4. 3...2...1...

    TIMEBOMB!!

    Are you kidding?

    Will my TV blow up!

My blender may accidentally be affected by the surge and turn on while my cat is investigating that clump at the bottom.

    Will my lights flicker?

I heard my radio will turn on and change the station to the 24hr Celine Dion channel.

    Can I ground my computer?

    Should I get a gasmask?

Will my computer automatically revert back to Windows 3.1?

    This is all very disturbing.......

  5. I read the thread on XP Processors. It contains the same issues I am still dealing with.

    P4 or AMD?

I mean if I go with the AMD I will need to get a board that complements the AMD to get the best performance, right?

And doesn't that mean that that board will not be a socket 478. This will prevent me from ever switching to a pentium chip. I am locked in to an AMD. What is the socket set for AMD?

SOOOOOO, whatever decision I make will lock me into that manufacturers chip because my motherboard will not support both.

Is AMD faster and better than P4?

So my decision comes down to this.

If I get an AMD with a motherboard designed for it, or I get a P4 with the ASUS P4B (I'm told that is the best for P4), ...WHICH ONE IS BETTER OVERALL.

I will not be using RDram if I go with the P4. Too expensive. Not transferable to other machines.

If you could choose between AMD with a motherboard to complement it, or a P4 with a motherboard to complement,......

WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

  6. I am thinking about buying a new Processor and Motherboard.

I think I am pretty sure about the processor.

    I know I want a Pentium 4.

Probably somewhere between 1.5 and 2.0 ghz.

I understand that I will probably want to get the 'mPGA478' series motherboard so it will be compatible with the next generation of chips that will use the 478 pin socket as opposed to the 423 pin socket. Should my processor be a mPGA478? Or is it just the motherboard I should worry about? What do you think about processors? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg but I want a signifigant upgrade from my 650mghz AMD K62.

From what I read, the ASUS P4B motherboard is one of the highest reviewed P4 motherboards around. It is a Socket 478. Seems to be maxed out and quick.

Does this sound like the route I should take?

    Any suggestions or alternatives?

Many people have tried to convince me to go with an AMD Athlon maxed out with a motherboard designed for the AMD Athlon.

    HELPPPPP!

I would like any ideas or input you guys have. I just want to ensure I get a great setup.

  7. I run a 3 web servers on 3 computers. I use WIN 2000 Server to do it. I think it is the way to go. Very soild. I also use a cable modem. The way I did it, was I created a folder that contains all of my web files. I called it....'d:web'....very original. The way you configure and setup your web server is by going to 'start -> program files -> administrative tools -> Internet Services Manager'.

A window will pop up that allows you to configure and control your web server and FTP server. When people refer to IIS, this is exactly what they are talking about. What you want to do is to right click on 'Default web site' and go to properties. This properties window is where EVERYTHING is done. You set the default directory for your web server, you can set permissions, logging, default document, etc. Go to the 'Home Directory' tab. See where it says 'local path', set that to the location of your default directory. As I said this is just the place where you are going to include all of your web files. The first thing that you want to do after you select the default directory, is to select your default document. Go to the documents tab and remove all of the documents that are listed. Select the add button and enter the name of a web page that exists in your default directory. Do not include the path. I.E. 'index.htm' is all you enter. This is asuming that you have made a web page and named it 'index.htm' and put it in your default directory. For now select any web page that is located in that default directory. Now open a browser and put in your IP address. You should see that web document. It is not quite that easy but that is really how you do it. Go ahead and try it and post your results. We will walk you through the landmines. A web server can be an awesomwe thing. Enjoy!

  8. Cool

I have 4 computers. 2 of them are exclusivly used for file sharing programs.

I have found that WinMX has the best selection of files but it is ALWAYS crashing.

    Next would be:

    Morpheus

    Bearshare

Kaza is really Morpheus with a different interface. They are SOOOO similar that your computer will not even let you run both at the same time.

  9. I have noticed that when some of my users are prompted to insert their Windows 98 cd during an installation or whatever they are getting an error.

During an install sometimes you will be prompted to insert your Windows 98 cd.

The problem is that IT APPEARS that if your operating system is second edition, you have to insert 'Win 98 second edition CD' or it will not always find the necessary files.

Is there any difference on the actual CD between editions of WIN 98?

Is it true that if you have 1st edition and you do 'Windows Update', that you will in effect have WIN 98 Second Edition?

  10. It seems like the MMC is the most confusing thing in all of WIN 2000 server. It has a snapin for just about every service on the server. However I have viewed all of the documentaion and MCSE guides, and I can't seem to find anything that provides a general description of it's functionality. You know, something that will give an overview of each snapin and provide an explanation for each service. I have literally looked everywhere. All of the Administrators I have spoken with say that they don't really use it that much. However, it seems to me that it looks like a very useful tool.

  11. I can't believe what I just heard. Is it true that with .NET you have to activate your installation?

What I heard was that if you own .NET and for whatever reason, you have to re-format and re-install, you have to pick up one of those devices from the middle ages called a "TELEPHONE" and actually place a call to Microsoft to get an activation number? Are you kidding me?

I heard that it will not be possible to do it online, you have to use a "TELEPHONE", or morse code or smoke signals or something. Can you imagine being an administrator who, for whatever reason, is spending the weekend re-installing .NET on the server at 2am while waiting on hold ....and waiting...and waiting.... I would think you would be lucky just to be waiting let alone actually get a hold of some 16 year old phone operator.

Ridiculous. Please tell me I am receiving bad information!

  12. Isn't there something in 'Administrative Tools' that allows you to back-up. I know there is some option to do a backup on things like the registry. What is that command....Is it in Administrative tools? Will it provide me with a backup up all of my users. I read the document you had a link to. It was extremely helpful, I handed out copies to all of the other techs here at the NBA. Thanks!
