  1. It was a permissions thing. I had to start the Block Level Backup Service to LogOn as my current user account. That's annoying!
  2. Just reinstalled Windows. Same error. This stinks! What can I check into now?
  3. Hi all, Every single Google hit on this subject under Vista mentions McAffee. I have never installed an anti-virus, firewall, security helper, etc. product on this box. I'm trying to start the Windows 7 backup application, and as soon as I hit "Set up backup", I get the error: The backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed (0x80080005). It turns out I cannot invoke Block Level Backup Engine Service. The error I get when manually starting that service is: -------------- Windows could not start the Block Level Backup Engine Service service on Local Computer. Error 0x800700b7: Cannot create a file when that file already exists. --------------- I traced using Process Monitor and it doesn't appear as though anything bizarre is occurring in sdclt.exe. I could be wrong, of course. Perhaps there's a permissions issue somewhere? Some help would be awesome! Update: This is a pristine image running Win 7 Ultimate RTM
  4. Looks like I was able to fix this by forcefully uninstalling several duplicate network adapters (one of them being PPTP) via the registry. I changed the characteristic bit to allow uninstall, and then I just picked off the problematic network adapters in Device Manager. Although the adapters didn't seem to be causing any problems, all my freezing went away when I disabled the dupes. Glad I looked in there! No more freezes now.
  5. I'd like to provide a little more detail. Looks like the callback notification just isn't taking place after I disconnect. Here is what I see: [304] 16:10:39:562: PPPEMSG_Stop recvd <...Stuff Here> [3752] 16:10:40:843: RemoveFromTimerQ called portid=0,Id=10,Protocol=c021,EventType=0,fAuth=0 [3752] 16:10:40:843: FsmThisLayerFinished called for protocol = c021, port = 4 [3752] 16:10:40:843: FsmThisLayerFinished called for protocol = 80fd, port = 4: 0 [3752] 16:10:40:859: FsmThisLayerFinished called for protocol = 8021, port = 4: 0 [3752] 16:10:40:859: NotifyCaller(hPort=4, dwMsgId=10) [3352] 16:10:40:953: PPPEMSG_LineDown recvd, hPort=4 [3752] 16:10:40:953: Line down event occurred on port 4 What I should see is: [17892] 06-15 16:10:29:416: PPPEMSG_Stop recvd <...Stuff> [1480] 06-15 16:10:29:593: PPPEMSG_LineDown recvd, hPort=4 [1548] 06-15 16:10:29:593: Line down event occurred on port 4 [1548] 06-15 16:10:29:595: FsmDown event received for protocol c021 on port 4 [1548] 06-15 16:10:29:595: RemoveFromTimerQ called portid=0,Id=10,Protocol=c021,EventType=0,fAuth=0 [1548] 06-15 16:10:29:595: FsmReset called for protocol = c021, port = 4 <...Stuff> [1548] 06-15 16:10:29:595: LcpEnd [1548] 06-15 16:10:29:595: Post line down event occurred on port 4 [1548] 06-15 16:10:29:595: NotifyCaller(hPort=4, dwMsgId=23) Why is everything hanging after line down event?
  6. 100% reproducible problem! Thinkpad T61 on XP SP3. Current version of Access Connections, Intel Wireless/LAN drivers, etc. I can login to my PPTP VPN server every time without any errors. However, every time I disconnect the VPN, Remote Connections freezes up and I can never re-establish any dial-up connection until I reboot. Ipconfig /release hangs, too. I've tried starting up using msconfig to disable all Thinkpad services and only have the most basic drivers started, and I still get the freeze every time I disconnect. VPN disconnect freeze happens regardless of whether I'm on my WiFi card or a Verizon datacard. Has anyone seen this?
  7. Wow--I figured it out! If you have the NetBIOS Helper Service disabled, you can't view Previous Versions!!! I re-enabled it and now I'm back in business.
  8. Bummer--I put everything on NTFS, and even though I'm not creating restore points for my page file drive (why bother?), I'm still not seeing previous versions.
  9. Interesting! Here is how my system is configured: C Drive - Physical Drive 1 - NTFS - Windows, Program Files E Drive - Physical Drive 2 - NTFS - Multimedia F Drive - Physical Drive 3 - FAT32 - SWAP File (System Managed) G Drive - Physical Drive 3 - FAT32 - Data files/temp files I'm wondering if I put everything on NTFS if my problem will be solved?
  10. Your description was stellar and made perfect sense. But unfortunately, even when I perform the exact steps you prescribe above, and despite all of my drives being covered by System Restore (well I have a FAT32 drive which does not show up; it's my page file and temp files disk), my sample .TXT file does not show any Previous Versions to restore from. I must be missing something stupid simple. What other steps can I take to figure this out? Here are some of my services settings: Windows Backup - Manual (Not Started) Windows Search - Auto Volume Shadow Copy - Manual (Started) Task Scheduler - Auto (Started) Offline Files - Disabled Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider - Manual (Started) Thanks for your continued help!
  11. Heh--I'm not an id***! My question was: - I have System Restore enabled for the C: Drive. How can I ensure a particular folder, such as C:\Work Files, will have restore points created for it? As it stands now, no folders have available previous versions despite having the C drive creating system restore points.
  12. I see what you're saying. Can you give me an example of a folder that should have restore points enabled? Also, aside from just turning System Restore on the entire C: drive, how can I force Vista to do regular restore points of non-critical folders?
  13. Thanks for your help. My main C drive (Windows, Apps, Data) has itself as checked under "Available Disks". Furthermore, there is a restore point created as of noon today, and there typically is one created each day. When I click on the C drive and choose "Restore Previous Versions", I see nothing available, however. Computer is not on a domain--it's a home machine.
  14. This is a clean install of Vista Business. At one point, I did have previous versions of most folders. Do you know what services, aside from Volume Shadow Copy, are required to make this work?
  15. Hey all, This is a general "what did I break?" question. For some reason, all of my folders show the "Previous Versions" tab, and I have been generating System Restore points somewhat often, but no files/folders have previous restore point information. In other words, I always see "No Previous Versions Available". Volume Shadow Copy service is enabled and doesn't SEEM to be erroring. What else can I check into to see why no file previous versions are available? Thanks for your help!
