  1. Just some beta-testing info for ya, Ach. I just reformatted my PC a few hours ago. I installed your old Nero Micro 7.7.5.1 (like I usually do) and burned a couple of DVD's with it. Then I decided to check back here to see if there was any news on Nero 7.10.1.0, and there was, so I downloaded this version: http://www5.rapidupload.com/d.php?file=dl&filepath=48693 I installed it on top of the 7.7.5.1. The serial I had used previously to install 7.7.5.1 was already displayed in the serial key field during installation, so I just kept clicking "Next". When I start up Nero, I get the infamous #5305 error. So... I re-installed 7.10.1.0, this time using a different serial key from one of the dozens of Nero CDs I have lying around. When I start up Nero this time, I get the "Your serial code supports more features. Would you like to update?" message. (Not the exact wording, I know, but close enough.) I say "Cancel", and.... voila!! I don't know if you'll EVER be able to get the activation perfect, but it seems to work OK. Hope this helps someone. PS: Still needs a little shrinkage. Prolly reshacking. Oh, and the download at "Rapid" Upload is anything but. Dirt slow!!

    Nice job, nuhi!

I hate to sound like a total arse-kissing fanboy, but I just gotta admire your handywork, nuhi. Nlite just keeps getting better and better. Are you sure you don't have a team of programmers?!? I just made my monthly XP cd using 1.3.5, and I noticed a couple things. Now, when I make my bootable ISO, I can name the ISO image the same as the working folder. For some reason, previous versions wouldn't let me do that. I guess nLite was trying to use the same protective filenames thingy that Windows uses. Except that, if the two files (or in this case, a file and a folder) are of different extensions (or types) than it's perfectly okay. Thanks for that! nLite also seems to be faster now. I'm guessing you changed the way it handles extracting/compressing files. Whatever the case may be, it integrates addons a little faster now. Only took 10 minutes to add Xable's Update Pack. I might try out some of the new removals in 1.4beta later this week. As soon as I get some cash, I'm definitely handing in a donation!
  3. Geez, nuhi, you got you're hands full since Vista hit the streets. You gotta make sure nLite works in XP and Vista, and you also have to make sure vLite works in both as well. Not to mention all the new headaches Vista presents all by itself: UAC, that whole "I'm the one who installed Vista, yet I'm not an Administrator" thing, compatibility problems, etc... Man, I don't know HOW you do it! But it's truly appreciated.
  4. @Ponch I don't really think it needs editing. There are quite a few options in nLite that require you to do a "double-take" and think long and hard about it, but I actually think this particular one is explained very well. In fact, it DOES have a pretty clear WARNING on it, as well. Just chalk this one up to "Not paying attention", and leave it at that.
  5. Yes, I did. I must've overlooked it this time, cuz I ALWAYS disable it. Thx, nuhi.
  6. Sorry for the bump. Has anyone else noticed this?
  7. This is a very interesting thread. See, I want to do something similar... er, but different. I have a Technician Toolkit CD that I make for myself. In it, I include all the drivers I use most: ATi, nvidia, Realtek, etc..) and I want to slim it down a little. I've already turned the driver installation programs into 7zip SFX's, which DID save alot of space (man, InstallShield sucks!!). But I want to take it one step further. Since I rarely need anything other than the XP drivers, I was gonna use a driver backup program to back it up (once installed on my system). This should be the XP driver ONLY. Then 7zip it. But.. I need to call up the INF file... on a CD. What should I use for the PATH?! Is there something I can use, similar to %24% or %SystemRoot%, except that it's the root path of the CD (no matter what drive I stick it in)?? [EDIT] PS: It doesn't need to be service-pack compliant. I don't plan to use this as an addon.
  8. So what if it's a beta? I find that software produced by just one person is usually better put-together than software from alot of "name-brand" corporations (i.e., Microsoft, Ahead Nero, Roxio, etc...) Too many cooks spoil the broth, I guess. If I find anything, though, I'll be sure to post it. nuhi, Can this version be installed "on top of" 1.35, or do I need to uninstall the old one first? As always, thx! Great work!!
  9. Ok, if I understand correctly, then all you're doing is just removing the drivers from the list in "Integrate Drivers" section. Basically, you're just preventing nlite from re-integrating the old drivers again, but you're NOT removing them. As far as I know, there isn't a way to remove drivers that you've previously integrated. At least, not thru nLite. You might be able to do it manually, but I don't recommend it. I'd say the best thing to do would be to load the same INI file if you like, but use a clean XP as you're source, instead of the already nLite'd one.
  10. I got a new one where I got the cd down to 320mb. I had to remove a lot of drivers to do it, but I realized that there are alot of drivers included with XP that I don't need anyways. In fact, removing the graphic drivers makes installing the newer ones MUCH less painful. I need to test it a little to make sure everything's ok, then I'll post.
  11. I'm not sure if this has already been discussed; if so, I apologize. I noticed on my last XP cd, using nlite 1.35, that certain components that I selected for removal (FrontPage, Movie Maker, NetMeeting) still have folders in "Program Files". The folders are empty, but in previous versions of nlite, those folders were removed altogether. Is this supposed to happen? Nuhi, did you do this on purpose for some reason, or perhaps I have done something wrong?
  12. Glad to see you're back, Ach!! Thank the stars for THAT!! If you need help with anything, count me in. I can also help with the Spanish translation if you need it. After getting a good look at the insides of your Nero, I think it all works really well. I kinda think you may have skimmed the icons a little bit too much though (with ResHack), because you CAN notice some pixelation on the desktop icon. I was going to alter mine to leave the 48x48 icons in. I agree with you that everything above that, though, is ABSOLUTE OVERKILL. I think the only reason Ahead decided to make them that big is for people who like to play with their desktops in Vista. I also noticed in the SDK (and your last version, 7751), you forgot to add the "/w" parameter to the desktop icon for Nero Express. me anytime!
  13. Ok, couple of things here: First, you don't need to use WMP Slipstreamer if you're already using one of boooggy's WMP11 Addons. The slipstreamer is mainly for someone trying to integrate WMP11 in a language other than English. It works using Microsoft's original WMP. If you're already integrating one of boooggy's WMP11 Addons, you don't need to use the Slipstreamer. Also, you might try adding everything in THIS order: Ryan's Update Pack WGA DirectX 9 boooggy's WMP11 DmX's IE7 Not to steal the thunder from nuhi (I still owe him big for helping me out ), but since alot of these addons are from RyanVM, you also might consider posting there for help.
  14. I wish I knew. I think he has a "day job", which (unfortunately for us) takes precedence over Nero Micro. But, thankfully, good guys like Major have filled the void, so I'd say the project is in good hands. Acheron used ResHack to get rid of alot of useless/oversized icons (among other things). I, myself, have also been busy trying to put food on the table (sigh), but I truly plan to put up a slightly smaller version in a day or two. We'll see. (Fingers crossed.)

    About Vlite

It all depends on what your needs are. But yeah, technically, it should at least boot up. I would recommend you do a little searching at MSFN forums to get some info first. Here's a couple of good pages to start you out with: http://www.msfn.org/board/Remove_Programs_t66361.html http://www.msfn.org/board/Complete_Beginne...end_t28005.html In general, I've found a good practice is to try removing just a few things at first. If the resulting Windows is to your liking, then try removing more, little by little. Otherwise, if you just go in and start removing stuff left and right, you may find you've lost support for something you really wanted... but since you removed tons of things, you have no clue as to what may have caused it!! Hope that gets you on your way. Good luck!!
  16. @neph Did you install VM Tools? Also, check your addons. Some addons contain tweaks which could conflict with those in NLITE.
  17. Yeah, it's mainly for the tweaks. But also, DmX adds all the IE7 hotfixes too, so it's 'up-to-date'. I prefer using DmX's package. There's nothing wrong with using the generic IE7 from Microsucks. NLITE eats it up just fine. But (at least for me, personally) first start-up seems to stick a little using the vanilla IE7. Is it 'safe'? I've made dozens of NLITE cd's, tweaked it 7 ways from Sunday, and never came across more than a minor hiccup. Like a lot of NLITE addons, the one you choose mainly depends on personal preference.
  18. A friend of mine downloaded Vista off of the net. It's just over 700mb. Unfortunately, it wouldn't fit on a CD, so he had to burn a DVD. I won't get into the details (as keeping with MSFN rules), but I'm pretty sure the one he got was made with vLite. It seems alot better than regular vanilla Windows Vista overall. Still buggy, though. The main problems seem to be with graphics drivers and codecs. Also, user permissions are a big pain in the ar$e, even with UAC turned off. I have my XP computer on the same LAN, but I need a password to get to his 'Shared Documents' folder. Thing is, he never set a password! No one has posted to this thread in months. Now that Vista has been out for a while, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had better luck?
  19. Hahahaha, thx maw!! I needed a good laugh! I really enjoyed how he repeatedly mentions that only the "Microsoft programmers" are qualified to take apart Windows. And also how he mentions all the "supposed" testing with 3rd party apps, and that (once again) only Microsoft knows. Not only is he comparing Microsoft to an all-seeing, all-knowing, omnipotent being, but if Windows is SO rigorously tested, (and only they know how to put it together), then how do you explain all of the game/software incompatibility problems in Vista?? And as for "verifiable proof of any performance gains", I think all of us who use NLITE have verified it for ourselves personally. Just disable a few services, and eliminate a few absurdly unnecessary components (which will reduce the number of REGISTRY entries, thus truly making Windows more responsive and boot faster... proven and verifiable!!) It's entirely too obvious that the blogger works in a Microsoft Support center. Poor lad. Can you share your .INI with us here?
  20. I'm surprised you didn't mention this in the very first post. Another thing (that is, if I'm understanding correctly what src2206 is trying to do): Shouldn't the first step be to take the old 40gb hard drive and place it in the new machine to see if there are any conflicts? If it boots up just fine, then all he would have to do is clone it and maybe install a couple drivers. And what about just using the File and Settings Transfer Wizard?

    inf files

; Um... they're just comments. How can they screw up your languages? ; They're just notes for programmers (or us geeks) as a guide. I think you might have removed something you shouldn't have. Either that, or maybe the CD didn't copy correctly to your hard drive before nlite'ment??
  22. Strange. Upgrade disks should work just like the full version, as long as it's OEM. In fact, as far as I know, Vista was the first OS to make you do what you describe. You could ResHack some files in your install to make it do this, but that's really not something you're supposed to do. It would violate MSFN rules for me to tell you how to do it. Not only that, but quite honestly, I think it'd be better to just get the full version.
  23. Idea was proposed here by Dexx. Maybe you could post them here as an attachment. Really, though, I think there should be a sticky for these, or perhaps maybe even an example INI or two could be included with nLite for future releases. And please post a brief description including: version of nLite used size of finished CD or ISO image general notes Here's mine: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: This INI will get rid of most of Microsoft's wonderfully included extras: NetMeeting, Media Center, Movie Maker. I also add alot of addons from RyanVM. It's not the 'litest', but it works just fine. I also removed (not disabled) a few services. Hasn't caused me any probs so far. For nLite v1.3 (I'll post a newer one later next week when the Update Packs come out.) Resultant CD should be around 400mb. last_session_xpr_0420.ini
  24. I really like that idea, Dexx!!
  25. That's odd. Sounds suspiciously like an advertisement for MagicISO. But if it's true, why not use ImgBurn to extract the files? I've also seemed to have better luck with 7zip lately. I just wish it had the Context Menu support that WinRar has....
