    vlite 1.0 final

just wondering what the progress is or an eta. btw keep up the great work.
  3. In case you don't know, the "Core" - labeled builds of Codename Longhorn Server are DX10-capable and can be reduced to a ~ 400 Mb disc. If you are comfortable with installing a new shell over the command prompt, it's a pretty tempting option. now what is this??? sounds very intresting could you explain a bit more? the only thing i got out of what you said was that another shell will be installed over the command prompt which i dont have any problem with....can it be bash ok so are you talking about the "CORE" - labeled builds of Codename Longhorn Server as the vista edition? explain more pease cause 400MB = now were talking (thanks to nuhi) just did a google search for "core longhorn server" and here is what it showed http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...orn-server.html now i read the article (which is intresting) but i dont think i could play games on it cause it dont have a gui nuhi do you know anything about this stuff? its the first time i seen a MS product without a gui since dos
  4. im with ya on this one...(i see where you are coming from) alot of us want our games to work great on vista we are willing to lose any components nessessary to achieve any frame rates. aviv00 i think nuhi is achieving this in another way with vlite....but with the same result (but no tweaks yet specific for gaming) but by removing components it does free ram and resources up making the games actually work better i would like vlite (for me) to be like the xbox live OS just so we can play games fast no extra servvices or anything just enough so our games will work "Online" maybe nuhi can give some tips about doing this but prob not...i see vlite is 1.0beta so that means its basically done i was hoping for something that just had DX and some netwroking and thats it just enough to make games playable and online and i would use linux as my main OS
  5. with all components checked on what is the size of the iso it creates for all flavours including x64 i would assume the vista home basic x86 with all components checked on would be the absolute minimal install... im going to test that one now and will report back with info please post the size of iso you created ONLY with all option checked ON and please post what install size it boots upto minus page file and minus hibernation file and before any updates would be nice to see what each version is doing in both x86 and x64 just for the hell of it ok with all options on and tweaks = anything that would save memory i checked on. size on disk 561 MB (588,578,816 bytes) this is vista home basic x86 note on the vlite installer when its first ran it asks about installing some scripts and the wmi (i forget exacyly what they were but its the very first thing) and only the bottom box was clickable so i installed it like i always do...but the top one wasnt clickable and i think it needed to be installed not sure anyhow not going to install tonight...got to much stuff i need to back up first but nice going nuhi (561MB) just wanted to say also....gosh dang the more i play with vlite the more windows looks like its based on linux with packages strange nuhi dont tell me your going to make vista use apt-get so we can install these packages anytime we want apt-get install Internet Explorer 7
  6. nuhi what are the only components that will be left when vlite is finished (goal wise) will the core be DX10? or some other component AND also MS releases DX10 bi-monthly if we update to the latest (fixes lots of game problems in vista currently) will it affect any other component in vlite if we did all the checks on (to remove everything we can) just wondering what your plans will be for the minimal install using vlite (what will have to stay on the HD to make vista boot)
  7. thanks nuhi yea i was looking in that "C:\Windows\winsxs\Backup" and mine measues 357MB and this is with the original vista ultimate x86 edition i boot into the original so that way i can get vlite, nero and acronis working then i "Make ISO" of a vista home basic by checkmarking all to on (that will be like my base install) but i cant get there cause i just got a new sony dru830a and it had a firmware of SS25 and i got the latest firmware on sony site for that drive and it said it was SS22 so i installed it hoping there would be an option to back the bios up but there wasnt one so it flashed it to SS22 like i told it too... now since im making coasters right and left (luckily im using dvd-rws) but still they are bad burns....im beginning to wonder if the shipped firmware was newer then what i dloaded fighting other problems right now but will get back on track trying to see what can be deleted....it might be able to help you a (little) with finding more stuff that can be turned off with vlite i swear i think i have OCD because i used to play with slackware since about 1998 and i would uncheck mark things it its installer to see how far i could get before it wouldnt start (with slack i was able to get it down to 170MBs and still get in to X (if i remember right)
  8. sweet im going to do the same thing as far as trying services and files to disable/delete im having some problems for getting a good base to start with though so im going to need a bit of time what im trying to do is make a true image first (this is of the vista ultimate x86) full install with no options turned off in vlite yet then im going to install that then install vlite and then im going to make to more dvds (one with no options in vista home basic x86 and the other same thing but in x64) THEN when that boots i got to make 2 more dvds for trueimage so that way i can easily restore back to a state where it was with the vista iso i made of either x86 or x64 AND my dvd burner is giving me problems right now i keep on having to erase a dvd and then install trueimage and then try and make an image of the HD and i keep getting errors give me some time and ill have some data for you and whoever is intrested will be working on it late tonight
  9. yes i am aware of that. that is why in my 1st post in this thread i mentioned both services and cleaning up directories i know it dont take 4gigs of disk space to have DX10 and net working this kind of a project is to get the "Bare minimum" as far as install size and services. vlite does a pretty good job but it still leaves a 3gig install and i know it dont take 3 gigs for DX10 and net to work (there has to be some more stuff we can delete) dont forget the actual games these days are around 4-8 gig dont think vista has to have 3-4gigs to make a game work in multiplayer so if anyone is intrested lets see how small we can get vista installed to and with minimum services.... i went through and set every service to manual that it would let me (i think 4-5 services stayed on automatic no matter what) but vista booted which i was surprised will start to set prob 10 at a time to disabled pretty soon and see if it can do it if it wont then i will have to enable it and goto the next 10 **** vista has alot of services look at the xbox 360, how big is its OS... and its only using DX9 i know the pc is not an xbox but a pc running vista or xp should be able to be trimmed down quite a bit just for purely gaming on the net... no wmp no IE7 no security etc.... shouldnt be to difficult im really surprised this hasnt been done along time ago... well nlite/vlite makes it all possible but maybe there is a profile nuhi can make for like net and gaming that just hacks the crap out of vista or xp (for multiplayer gaming would be nice
  10. hi all so far this is how far i have gotten picking vista home basic x86 vlite = every check mark ON installed all my drivers and windows updates that would let me (had problem with net3.0) and didnt dload extras or language packs installed DirectX april im sitting right at 3.Gigs (after i delete temp files and everything in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" maybe someone can help me what i want is just a DirectX 10 gaming box with net connection i dont care if the box is a security risk here is my system specs amd x2 4200 OC to 2.6ghz 2gig ram asus a8n32-sli-deluxe (latest bios) 4 sata drives in a raid0 (bios-raid) nvraid syncmaster 215tw (using DVI) i want to delete everything i can after vista is installed (so if anyone knows any directories i can delete and services i can turn off) i would appreciate it i seen a vista tweak guide on these forums i will look at again BUT first i want to delete as much as i can after vista is installed i have seen alot of MBs in the following dirs... C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\Temp = 1.5gigs and its a temp dir??? wont let me delete any of the files (ive tried) C:\Windows\winsxs = 1gig not really sure what this is remember im going to have linux installed on another partition for surfing etc.... all i want with the vista install is just a GAMING box with net (thats it) i dont care about security at all or user accounts for a long time now i have wondered why dont MS release just a GAMING OS and please dont tell me go buy an xbox/xbox 360 vlite is the only app i am aware of that CAN get this done (it can get rid of anything almost and in affect make it into a gaming box with net) now the rest (since i use everycheck mark to on in vlite) is cleaning up and disabling services if someone can help out on this we can have the ultimate gaming box with DX10 and net if anyone is intrested in this let me know and i will help test to any settings you say as far as deleting files/dirs and diabling services thanks
  11. in memory yea they arent whql but i thought they dont have to be whql (thought they only needed to be signed) being signed and whql are two different things to my understanding
  12. my bad on thinking aero theme was aero glass. it dont need to recopy the source....it just needs not to touch the source (only read from it) like when you "make ISO" it makes the ISO in a new dir outside the working dir from within vlite...when i get to the "Drivers" step i added all my drivers last night...chipset, nvraid, monitor, sound and video card (note all COMPONENTS were checked ON in vlite) so there was no drivers so i added mine vlite i used "multiple drivers" located in one dir with subdirectories and it seen and added them fine so i made the ISO and burnt it went to reboot and install but it kept saying the drivers wasnt certified and i kept hitting install about 20-30 times and same messages kept coming up so i started to hit do not install about 20-30 times then it finally completed the isntall im not sure if i needed to hit install anyways 20-30 more times or if from the beginning i should have hit dont install my point is i dont think it is installing anything when that message comes up and we hit "install anyways" im not sure
  13. hey all i just wanted to give an update i switched to fooling with vista home basic x86 (all i want is a good game machine for DX10 as i have a geforce 8800gtx) and i will use linux for my main OS on another partition i turned on everycheck mark in vlite i inserted all my drivers (chipset, raid, sound, video and monitor) the image is at 650 im buring as i write this... i had a problem with windows update on the prev image (which was all check marks on also) i couldnt dload net framework 3.0 update (actually i think it was the whole thing not sure) but either way it would fail everytime not sure if i will have the same prob with vista home basic x86 but i bet i do when we goto windows update (no matter which version we are using) how do you know which updates are ok to get? what if we get updates and we dont even have that component installed? will it break anything? couple suggestions for the creator of vlite picking vista home basic lists some features that i do not believe that are supposed to be there. ex: aero i seen in there when i think its supposed to be only in vista home premium and ultimate some suggestions just to make vlite better now if you pick vista ultimate (and then look at the components to either check on or check off) it would be nice if it would say found only in "vista ultimate", "vista home premium", "vista home basic", "vista business" etc... AND a big one that gets me every **** time when you first run vlite it asks for the source (vista) and then you pick the destination dir....and then it takes about 45mins to copy if you are using the "All In One" DVD anyhow i have messed up i guess a couple times becuase i clicked finish once before "Make ISO" and then there was another time when i just did a "Direct Burn" well it deletes all the files from when it originally did the source/destination transfer.... so baiscailly what i am saying is after the copying from the source to the destination that dir should be read only so there is no way to change its contents just a few suggestions i think could improve you already great app thanks
  14. ok i browsed to the x64 dir on the dvd (copying is almost done) from vlite hope it works ok will give feedback
  15. if so what do we browse to on the dvd for the x64 version (will it still get the boot sector right?) last time i tried was a really long time ago.
  16. how did you get your dir output txt file to look like that? your looks way nicer (and understandable then mine)
  17. thanks will check into it right after i do this fresh install (full install) this is on the cpu that has 1 terabyte of space /me mumbles **** 2GB on other machine
  18. ok: other question what is the smallest anyone has got vista x86 (using vlite) a minimal install if you will.
  19. here is mine with this commonad when i am in the root of my d:\ dir /a/s > 32and64vista.txt 32and64vista.txt
  20. i think there is a dos command to output dirs and all files in dirs to a txt file but i cant remember how
  21. i have a version that has all the different flavors on one dvd including x86 and x64 is that the problem you think?
  22. i make the iso with vlite with "make iso" i then burn with nero dont want to install any vm ware unless it there is no way else
  23. nope im still burning but will post if (checking on all the green arrows) and doing a quick convert to make iso before, i tried to make both version (quick and the long) but i didnt have and green checks on in the components section hope this works wonder what the min install size is for vista??? maybe its giving that error cause i just dont have a hd over 2gigs maybe the problem is im doing this from winxp x64 and creating an vista x86 image maybe its because i copied the install files from the dvd to the hd i not sure PS DID NOT WORK same error
  24. yep RTM wait i wasnt checking any compenents (i though blank (no green check mark) meant it dont get installed) maybe that was it burning iso right now. will let you know if that fixed it? is it going to be possible to get vista on a 2gig hd?
  25. hi all i get that error ( im not sure if this is the reason) i copied the vista x86 dir contents to a location on my hd (works faster for me) anyhow i select that dir and vlite recognizes and it lets me make my iso just fine. but when i try to boot from that iso i get this "Windows PE cannot start because the actual SYSTEMROOT directory (X:\Windows) is different from the configured one (X:\$Windows.~BT\Windows). This can be configured with peimg /targetpath..." exactly like the first post in this thread http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t81687.html not sure what to do with all the replies he got cause that is to advanced for me can someone explain what i need to do so i can install thanks forgot you might need this info the machine im creating the image on is an adm64 x2 4200 running winxp x64 (fully updated) the image that is created will be for an intel p4 2.8ghz box and it will be running windows ultimate x86 if this works yep RTM
