have Long file names copied on hd
cyberchicken replied to cyberchicken's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Don't tease me I AM good with scripting but let me underline some issues: a file can have a costant long filename but its shortname may vary depending on the logical loacation in which resides/is moved. Example: imagine a dir with "my long file name A.txt" ---> mylong~1.txt "my long file name B.txt" ---> mylong~2.txt now copy file 'B' elsewhere alone you'll have: "my long file name B.txt" ---> mylong~1.txt the file has changed short name! also numeric index(~1) is not univoque from a given directory, it matters als the ORDER, the TIME in which the files hav been added in the dir (first get first free number) consider also that having ~# is optional on fat32 and ntfs and joliet on cd is similar it seems to know for sure what short name a file has I should burn the whole cd first run a simple script to create the $rename.txt (sfn-lfn pairs) and then add $rename to the cd :-) very impractical thank you microsoft for non implementing long file names in dos 7!! They're geniuses! Thank you bye -

I DO have ref.chm (and read it) and as I wrote Really, does anybody had ever used $$rename.txt? As I said I found this FreebyteZip wich is extremely small and... works. -

Please!!! Someone post here! You can even say f****ff if you feel so But let me know I'm alive -
Don't be sorry! Geez! You're too fast man! Anyway I ran that setup BEfore Apr 29 2004, 01:48 AM I can't use your code before you publish it! Hey, you told me that were 6 weeks to wait before the new version! You pulled my leg I hade many of them in the various situations I tried, but have no logs.I'll tell you if I see them if you're keen on eliminating glitches. Is that a comparison I can mail you? In this very moment I have the two isos you said. I'm NOT going to make a manual setup! Don't think so: I have no custom files except some test bacthes i run from the various unattended run point (they're basically hello world with time stamp), and obviously an unattend.txt ran from command line. I think to remember, but I'm not sure, that the problem with the network disappears if I remove sp1 from the slipstreaming (leaving all the others and shwflash). bye

YES! I recreated the conditions by which swflash.cab ruins my installation. But first some replies @Alanoll I knewn It, but somehow I found those errors strange... It's not that simple beacause If I start the right services (workstation and dhcp at least), next reboot are off again. @mr_shaba If you say so then it could be some interaction between one of the patches and the way swflash.cab is slipstreames. Hav you dropped any patch between webmedic's script and xpcreate? Anyway for me is like that: I don't need shwflash and I need all other patches, so I'll drop the first. To GM the task to understand what's going on. As I was said I reproduced the malfunctioning. (I remind I'm using vmWare 3) Had to rerun xpc since last one some how missed a file (pdbbccp32.dl_). The printed report is the same, with "file not found" right after "looking for sata drivers". I attache the xpc log The simptoms are: the network at first logon is not working (while without swflash I can immediately communicate with my other machines); Workastation and DHCP_client are off (Automatic, not started); if I start them at the next reboot they're again stopped. Thank you Bye XPCREATE.LOG XPCREATE.LOG

s**t! I'm very dumb, I slept too little Anyway, I made the rerun with 24-apr xpc I attach the logs. I'll tell you tonight when install is finished and I'm back home. I wonder the same hmmm very interesting. I have the AVG. I'll try to switch it off the next test. -- 15.30.41 --> Setting up Run-Time Variables.-- 15.30.41 --> Listing Hotfixes and Updates -- 15.30.42 --> Removing Previous Creation Directories. -- 15.30.43 --> Removing TEMP Files. -- 15.30.48 --> Creating TEMP directories. -- 15.30.48 --> Start copying files. -- 15.32.34 --> Determine Source Version. -- 15.32.34 --> Found Source Version: XPP -- 15.32.34 --> Found Minor Version: 1 -- 15.32.34 --> Found Service Pack Version: 0 -- 15.32.34 --> Found Language Version: ENU -- 15.32.34 --> Slipstreaming Service Pack. -- 15.32.34 --> Extracting Service Pack : xpsp1_en_x86.exe -- 15.33.00 --> Merging Service Pack : xpsp1_en_x86.exe -- 15.33.15 --> Copying Hotfixes: Type 1 -- 15.33.15 --> Extracting for sort order. -- 15.33.46 --> Sort Hotfixes ... -- 15.33.46 --> Copying Hotfixes: Type 2 -- 15.33.49 --> Copying SVCPACK Executables -- 15.33.49 --> Repack all the Special Case Type II Hotfixes -- 15.33.49 --> Slipstreaming MDAC update. -- 15.34.06 --> Repacking any MSI installers. -- 15.34.06 --> Repacking dotnetfx.exe -- 15.35.19 --> Updating Macromedia Flash. -- 15.35.21 --> Merging Hotfixes. -- 15.35.31 --> Creating Command File to extract Hotfixes. -- 15.35.36 --> Launching Hotfix Extraction Script. -- 15.36.37 --> Saving the CAT files. -- 15.36.37 --> All Hotfixes extracted: Clean out the junk files. -- 15.36.37 --> Expanding the CABS. ...And they are? I already managed to make some tests with this Does it really accept only one dir as input? You may be happy to know that writing a floppy image in xpcreate.ini i obtain a booting cd in emulation mode. Yet I didn't use this method (I still go with nero by now) cause the rest of the image had some problems with stuff inside $oem$. (could not read cmdlines.txt even if file was shown as present). I tried only once so can't report exactly. Anyway I had to put nero in DOS mode for the code page to have the $oem$ dollar sign burnt correctly. Bye

I made a search in unattended forum for +long +file +names and found nothing, so don't bash me if it's a faq or boring My setup disk is dos based (floppy emulation). This allows me to use tools I am used to and to launch winnt.exe choosing wich unattend.txt to load and using udb files to differentiate various machines. I'm considering to include cdshell to be able to load even xpboot.bin to be able to do such things as a repaira installation and a "standard" installations. I use xcpcreate to slipstream hotfixes but this is irrilevant. I'm also considering to use xplode to deploy my preconfigured user and applications. Now. I want my cd to hold the normal stuff plus my default user, some preloaded software (that dont need installation) and software to be installed. The problem is that those 3 things use long filenames so they get screwed by $oem$ textmode copy. Also lfn support in dos exist but is experimental and basically doesn't work. Also WinPE is not considered because is quite big and I would like to maximise the software payload on my cd. Also $$Rename.txt is somhow too dirty and difficult to maintain (I should create a script that creates $$Rename.txt from the image of my cd but the short name of a file is not certain before burning) Also copying files during guimode setup has the difficulty of finding the cd (if the cd hasn't been removed at all) Also had considered zipping lfn files and extract from copied $oem$ the during guimode. This works (tried), but I'dl like to have a nicely browsable cd even for after setup operations. I made a lots of statements, hope you don't think I'll never be happy! I just wanted to ask your advice. Tell me if I was wrong or if I forgot something! Am I the first who has those needs? PS. I KNOW it's not the right place, but, do you know how xpload identifies #sourcedrive#? Thank you

%EXITQUIET% Found! I'm gonna do the way you told with a wrapper

Even other than those two? It's obviuous. What kind of license? I would never redistribute any mod. Specially without giving credit. Maybe I'll just pass it to a friend who's working with me on an install disk. That's why in the first place I proposed those mods here Oh well ther are two reasons: "press enter" at the end of xpcreate, but maybe you're gonna tell me there's an optiont ti suppress it, and the fact that that if I run REMOVE or whatever after xpcreate I loose it's ability to make and burn the iso. Sure I could reproduce the burning behaviour in my code now that I think. I really hope that you don't think that I am polemic. I am very thankful to you and everybody here for the attention I receive. Personally I'm kind of a roamer, I never stop in a place too long. Nontheless I didn't find many communities that make me feel at home like this. bye

No, there is a mispelled filename that pauses an unuattend installation.I must go with my memory... it's "privacy.ht_" which he supposed to refer to privacy.htm but actually refers to privacy.hta. Can't remember which remove is it in, but's easy to find. Good! I DID NOT expected or asked an incorporation. But xpcreate works (reasonably) a directory UP the root (that is two directories UP the i386) while Removes works only ONE up i386, therfore REMOVES have to be either modified or moved in place and run after xpcreate. If a generic section or folder would exist in xpcreate, sorts of "batch plugins" could be used before or after xpcreate. For example, to maintain xpcreate dir structure, one could think of a "POST" folder in which to drop the Removes he wants to be run, wich will be copied to the cdroot (or whatever temp dir) run and then deleted. I can do these modification myself but I wanted to suggest a solution for everybody. Just think about it. Thank you Bye!

I KNEW THEM! I SWEAR! I ispected the code! But as they were unreferenced in xpcreate.ini I thought they might be non functioning and preferred not to try them! Hmmm it is also a way to know what has been slipstreamed with distribution files, don't you think? I mean I make a cd and it seems to work. In 3 weeks I use it to setup a machine and find a flaw. With an embedded log I can trace back the initial conditions. Anyway if you don't mean to include it I can alway paste my two lines in the batch. I'll never again say anything bad about your baby Anyway I never said or thought that XPcreate was buggy. Always ran perfectly. Except... if it doesn't find a burner it somehow breaks (doesnt show Press Enter) but that's the very last operation and everything is fine by then. Really weird how programming styles can be different. Now I'm sure that if I'd show you my works you'd judge them very bad. Well probably. They're not! Ah, about Remove same as above. I you don't think it good to include I'll do it myself as I can. Thank you ciao!

Hmmm the size is right and the version inside the .inf is VersionNumber = "7,0,19,0" Very strange, isn't it? Then in the next days I'm gonna get the latest xpcreate, have a good log and show you exactly just what happens. Forgot to mention tha I'm using xp pro, main sp is sp1-non-a and test rig is on vmware thank you yawn good night

Now. A Style is a collection of Icons, cursors, wallpaper, sounds, colors, screens, etc Am I right? WinXP has two... "settings"... one is squarish like windows2000 and the other is like... ehr XP with round buttons, round windows etc. How is it called this category of things? Also How is it called the simple collection of windows colours? My aim is to have my Xp wind square things (like w2000) but a good set of very dark colors, beacuse this machine is to be used near my tv during movie watching I managed to build my set of colors but as the internal editors sucks, some items get really hard to be seen etc... BTW the interna style/colors editro really SUCKS, is'nt it? I dloaded stylexp and I'm gonna try some dark styles (but I don't think I'm browsing all the 124 pages of styles collected at themexp). I don't really need a Style, just the colours. Any suggesitions to keep things simple? Sorry for the really dumb questions , but I need to know the precise meaning of words to get on with you. Thank you PS How much is the max??

Forgot to add a thing I'm planning to use jdeboeck's Remove to slim down sources. As from my test it is compatible with xpcreate, but have you got any hard info? Also having a plain way to integrate the two procedures Could be a rrreally COOL feature I think. But as they are, expected directory structures of the two procedure are a bit incompatible. BTW do you know where I can contact jdeboeck? I found a little bug and have a suggestion even for him... but haven't been able to receive a reply bye

Hello GM! Thank you for the tool, I would ha never managed to make it by myself. I'd like to suggest a few changes I did myself, but sure you can incorporate them in a more convenient fashion MAKEISO=0/1 to skip image creation BURNISO=0/1 to skip image burning DELETETEMP=0/1 to delete all temporary files at the end of cd creation by now, if I'm not wrong they're deleted at the beginning of the process also an option to EMBED XPCREATELOG into distribution disk, to have a trace of what kind of cd one is using. this is how I implemented them in the xpcreated.cmd I used these days rem in the very first section in the cleanup subroutine With all the respect to GM and everybody's work, I find this code a bit ugly and very hard to maintain. For example many objects (xpcreatelog for example!) are non parametrized (hold in a variable), some subroutines are not used and a lot of code is repeated instead than reutilized. I'm not new to batch, I worked tons of code in 4dos/4nt, but I admit that cmd capabilities (which I don't know deeply) are much limiting in doing what I point out. I myself tried to convert :DELETEALL subroutine to a looped one and failed, probably to the much hated commadn line limit. Nontheless I think that an "easier", less scaring, XPCreate.cmd would help bringing more scriptkiddies to the dark side of the programming meaning that having a grasp of functioning leads to modifications, knowledge, etc... Thank you Cyberchicken (who's typed english might have many bugs 'cause he's tired)

First of all, Hello Everybody and thank you especially to our patron here, GM Just a little report after my 30 setups in 6 days. I WONT post my xpcreate log by now cause I'm working on something else right now, but I will if GM thinks it's really interesting. Making it short: dloaded almost all Hotfixes here; put them in the right folders following GM's site indications; my setups works fine except that netorking doesn't work at start: workstation and dhcp client services are off and if I started (net works) next reboot are off again. Made a binary search (well not at start) to find WICH f**g patch was that that was rotting my setup and found that was swflash.cab! The most innocuos in my thought. The problem is that I don't know what version I have: I googled the file name and dloaded the first I found on shockwave domain. I think that a link to a valid, trustable cab would be good. Thank you see on the other post Cyberchicken (who forgot to write a signature)
