I was trying to get into the Users folder and I saw that it is being hidden as a system folder. It was also marked as read only. I was able to uncheck the read only box but the hidden box is greyed out and won't let me uncheck it. I went to a cmd prompt and tried the attrib -h /s /d command but I get a message saying No resetting system folder c:\users. Any ideas why this happened and how to change it?

That would work a lot better than the backup does. I have currently been using an XP PE disk with ntbackup on it and that works okay it is just a hassle.

I am using the business edition. I have gone through the backup using the backup Backup Files option and using the Backup Computer option. Neither one will let me choose a folder to backup to only a drive to backup to. When I go to the next screen after selecting where to put the backup, it won't let me uncheck the C drive and will only allow me to check or uncheck drives on this screen. The screen after that asks which file types do I want to backup. It has a list of file types. At the bottom of the list is says additional files but it will not let me select specific files or folders that I want to backup. The next screen has the schedule of when to run it and the only options at the bottom are save settings and start backup or cancel.

I want to be able to backup specific folders and files and back them up into a specific folder on a different drive. Vista back will only let me select the backup drive and not the folder. It doesn't let me browse the folders and files that I want to backup.

I am not too happy with the backup in Vista and I have been using the beta of Norton Save and Restore and not too pleased with that either. What I need to backup is not so much my system drive as it is my data. I have been thinking about using Winrar to backup data. I am able to run winrar from a PE disc that I burned. Anyone see any problems or issues using this method to back up data? If so do you have any suggestions for better software?

When you try that with the older nf4 chipset, it does not work. I was wondering if that same problem exists with the nf570 chipset.

Anyone know if you can install the nf570 sata raid drivers properly when doing a clean install of Vista? I have an older nf4 chipset and I cannot load the drivers and install to the raid created with that chipset. I had to use an sil3114 pci card in order to install vista. After the install I was able to update the drivers. I am building a second system that is an X2 4600 AM2 cpu on a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 mobo.

I will read up on the AIK. I had only looked at and worked with the pe part of it.

I got this idea after downloading the the Windows AIK and creating a PE 2.0 image that had my drivers slipstreamed into it. Let me know if this logic sounds okay. I was thinking of using the imagex command to mount the install.wim image from the vista disk and then copying the drivers to the file repository of the system32\drivers folder and then comitting the changes and saving the image onto my hard drive. I could then use a program like ultraiso and overwrite the install.wim that is in the vista iso. Would this work? If so, do I just need to copy the actual driver file into the drivers folder or do I need to place the folder with the inf and txtsetup.oem files into the repository?

I was able to get the drivers slipstreamed. I have been reading the help files but I have a couple of questions and I was wondering if anyone could help me out. First, what is a good shell to use with PE 2.0? I have been trying to get explorer to work but with no luck so far. Also how do I enable the network so that I can map a drive and dump an image to it? UPDATE: I was able to access all of my raid drives and the got the network driver working. Just before using the /prep command I copied over my Opera folder, Nu2Menu, and A43 and Totalcommander. All of these items run in PE 2.0. Now as I am not familiar with nu2menu I need to read up on how to edit the nu2menu.xml file so I can opera, a43 and TC to the menu. If I have time I am going to try to write a small gui for the imagex program using either vb or .net.

You are absolutely correct. I gave it the folder path and not the actual file.

I tried that but the raid driver that I am trying to slipstream uses a txtsetup.oem file. I tried it after step 3 and after step 4 but I got the same error. If I use the /inf and put the path I get the following error: Installing INF package: e:\sil PEIMG failed to complete the operation with status code 0x800f0003.

Thanks for this wonderful guide. I was trying to do that myself and just wasn't able to until I got your bat files. Do you know if it is possible to slipstream drivers into the this pe like you could with the pe from the xp disc?

Any way to disable that? I remember that there was a problem in xp when you deleted and avi and there was a registry key to delete to fix that.

I have defender disabled and indexing shutdown. There is no other drive activity. Here is a little more information. It seems happen almost explicitly with avi, vob, or mpg files.

Another thing you can do is this. If you open a folder you see the list of links on the left side. Don't like what is there? What to change them or add something else? Easy, go to the C:\user\your_username\links folder. Put in any shortcut there you want or change any existing ones. These links are what show up on the left side.

Is there any way to speed up files deletion? I process home video and convert it to dvd format and then burn it. After burning the dvd, I delete the large vob files. This takes a very long time. Is there any setting to speed this up? It doesn't take that long in XP.

Is there a way to stop the version of vista from being displayed on the lower right corner of the desktop?

I have installed the Home Premium version to check it out. When I was using the ultimate version, there was a registry fix to show the administrator account on the login screen. I had to go to the manage after right clicking my computer and select users and enable the administrator account. In this version, users is not listed when you are in the manage mmc. Anyone know how to enable the administrator account in home premium?

I have googled it and so far I haven't found any information about the actual registry settings. All I can find is general information about it which basically tells me it is very similar to the enableprefetch command in xp but I would like to know that the settings mean. The value for it right now is 1. I would like to know if that can be changed like it could with the enableprefetch setting.

I managed to get the problem fixed. I disabled the nforce nic and enabled the marvell gigalan nic and the problem is gone.

Does anyone know what the values mean for superfetch in the registry? I know that the enableprefetch has settings of 1, 2, or 3 meaning off, boot files only, boot and application. Is it the same for superfetch?
