Get this file.NTVDM_nlite.inf

Copy to inf subdirectory of windows directory.

Run the following:

Install 16-bit subsystem:

rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\NTVDM_nlite.inf,NTVDM.Install

Remove 16-bit subsystem:

rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\NTVDM_nlite.inf,NTVDM.Remove

[adding 16-bit support]

Can be restored. No formating needed!

I had the same problem, so I made an installer by which you can add 16 bit support.

No uninstaller. Sorry!
