Vmware is faster. The main advantage of XP mode is that it includes the XP software. It seemed really slow to me I dumped it pretty fast and stuck with my VMware that I already have. I also think it will only run on the Pro and Ultimate editions.

I wasn't impressed with it. Sometimes you need XP to run older software especially on 64 bit.

I've had some success with music cd's trying these things. First try coping the disk at the slowest speed. Do a search on repairing cd's .I've polished out scratches and got the music cd's to play and recopy them. I use some really fine type of jewler's paste polish and a q tip it may take several tries to get it. You also need to wash the disk with soap and water to get the film off. I have seen some cd repair kits in the cd section of stores but have never tried them.

Well If you are talking about the virtual PC just create a new one. If you don't want the old one anymore just delete it. Did you try the VMware forum http://communities.vmware.com/index.jspa

Go into the actual program file. Sometimes I have found installers there that don't show up.

Unless you have a full Retail Copy of XP you'll have to buy another. The preinstalled XP and Vista installed by most makers is not transferable.

Did you run your cleaning program before the first problem? It sounds like the second fault was caused by your cleaning program removing needed files.

I've found a clean install and then loading software does fragment the drive a lot. Defrag is a simple quick step to take before looking deeper. I defrag at least once a week. If I've done complex stuff like video or photo editing I run after I finish.

Did it crash while downloading sp2 or during the install process? It should be simple thing. Try downloading and saving this file http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en then burning it to cd. I use this with my Dell XP disc that is befoe SP1 when I slipstream it. Ignore their note saying not to download for 1 computer!

That's why they recommend testing on a virtual machine first. MS has a free one.

Did you simply add SP2 to an existing install? Is this a new slipstreamed install with lots of addons? If It's been slipstreamed always a good idea to test on virtual machine first. If this is slipstreamed did you remove things with NLite or manually?

That seems pretty large, when I make a new disk for XP Pro SP2 with Ryan's update pack and addons and use Integrator mine comes out around 550 meg. Did you add a bunch of other addons? You might try eliminating the Lang file to save space. I've never tried it but have seen it recommended many times as a way to gain space on a cd. I don't know about burning to a dvd.

I couldn't find the link I wanted but this one mentions it slightly in the post by Gurgelmeyer http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...5&st=0& apparently Dell and some others added patches that are not integrated well and cause trouble when you try and slipstream their proprietary OEM disk. If I remember the Dell addons interfere with the slipstream of addon packs like Ryan's and Xables. Proprietary OEM disks are not the same as OEM from MS used by independent builders.

Some simple questions Did you add many addons? Did you go into NLite and remove some "unneeded" things? Did you test the updated cd on a virtual machine? Was your source a clean source or one of the updated messes that Dell and some other makers used poorly added hotfixes? Is this your first attempt to slipstream a XP cd? I always test my finished disk on a virtual machine MS has one FREE.

I'm curious how you removed IE 7. I removed it through control panel and it reinstalled IE 6.

Sorry if you were offended but many people post here that go to all kinds of bad places like Jeremy and I mentioned or have kids on and don't have any idea what they are doing online.
I have no experience with Linux maybe it has something to do with that. Many of these security programs treat third party cookies and java applets from legit sites as malware. That's one reason I delete cookies and temp internet files before running a scan. Norton was a big offender with .jar files from legit sites as being detected as a virus. I think it had to do with sun's virtual machine that was require by some sites when Microsoft was using their own version. Try running CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ before scanning that should clean out the junk.

I always delete cookies and temporary internet files before scanning. Sometimes security programs identify things as a threat when in reality they aren't. Sounds like you go to some pretty crappy sites if you pick up that many problems. Avoid file sharing sites too! Be careful with instant messenger programs and accepting files there. Do you have kids using the computer? If so you may need to do some other things to limit where they go.

I've got an old 450 Pentium II with 256 ram. I use Avast free, Avg free also worked except for a conflict, Zone alarm free, and Spybot Search and Destroy. I use this as a second machine to go online with if I have the other one tied up. It's good enough to surf and email with but wouldn't expect a whole lot more. I've kept software to a minimum.

One more thing you might check in the help/about area is to see if there is a product key and the name it was registered to some programs do show that info. You may be able to download again it using that key code and name and activate it. Since you bought it used your pretty much stuck with programs as is. If you bought it from a private party you might contact them and see if they have any cd or registration info. You might find the code on the program home page also.

Were these programs freeware? If you bought and downloaded you should be able to download again if you saved your info customer number registry code etc. I still run Photo Deluxe 3.0 for photo editing (better than the crap in Roxio or Dell's photo program) . It does require a plugin and additional patch for it to run on xp. It may take some work to find these since the programs have been discontinued and are no longer supported. In the programs you might try clicking on the help then about and it frequently gives a link to their website.
I'd go with the clean install too.
