How to Determine the Most Recent Version of a File?

Take CUSTSAT.DL_, custsat.dll, for instance.

Using nLite to integrate RVMAddonsWMP10_3.1a.7z into an XP CD.

nLite reported two versions.

The SP2 version, 9.0.2600.2180.

And a newer(?) version from the service pack, 1.0.18.1900.

Seemingly, nLite would have chosen to keep the 2180 version instead of the 1900 version.

I kept the 1900 version.

Is that correct?

How do you determine which is actually the "newer" when there are such varying version numbers?

In the end, CUSTSAT.DLL, ended up in \windows\echome\ & dllcache (same), and yet a third variety in \network diagnostics\?
