Urgent help on formatting problem

I am currently writing my thesis and I have a serious problem with word. I have started writing it with MS Word 2003 with the template in MS word. Now, when I apply a formatting the whole document is applied with that formating. But when I undo formatting is removed except the section I needed and give the effect I wanted.

Say, I bold some section... Then the whole document get bold. Then when I undo, only the selected section remains bold. I was using this all along. But, it doesn't work always and it's a real headache. I have installed word 2007 hoping it'll solve the problem. But, no luck.

Please, help me to correct this situation.
