Excel 2003. Automatic carriage return

Is there any way to get Excel 2003 to automatically drop to the next cell after a specified number of characters in a cell? Most of the posts I read on this people say things like "how is Excel suppose to know when you are done, it cant read your mind". Yeah, well, duh! But you can limit the characters in a cell, so is there no way to attach an action when that character limit is reached? Basically I am creating a up/down list and doing countif's at the bottom for the totals...I'm just lazy and am trying to not have to manually do the carriage returns. Anyone have any ideas?
