Winlogon.exe crashed - does the box boot in safe mode? If so, run sfc /scannow from a command prompt (you'll likely need your Windows disc in the CD drive or somewhere on disk).

I am not able to login at all. But I am able to get some access by Booting from a USB with BartPE.

when i try to run sfc from command prompt, I get the error Windows file protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable]

When I tried to run mmc, i got the error, mmc failed to initialize because it was installed correctly or because a portion of the registry has been corrupted. make sure file mmcndmgr.dll is registered by running " regsvr32%systemRoot%\system32\mmcndmgr.dll"

running regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mmcndmgr.dll corrected the error and I was able to open mmc.

To determine whether this certificate has been removed from the system, follow these steps: 1. Locate a Windows 2000-based computer that exhibits these symptoms.

2. Click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK.

3. In the Microsoft Management Console, click Console, and then click Add/Remove Snap-in.

4. In the Add/Remove dialog box, click Add.

5. Click Certificates, and then click Add.

6. Click Computer Account, and then click Next.

7. Click Local Computer, and then click Finish.

8. Click Close, and then click OK.

9. In the console tree, double-click Certificates (Local Computer).

10. Double-click Trusted Root Certificate Authorities, and then click Certificates.

11. In the details pane, locate the No Liability Accepted certificate. If the certificate is missing, follow the steps in the "Resolution" section to export the certificate from another workstation and import it.

I am able to open mmc and go until step 4. But there is no CERTIFICATES in the add/remove dialog box. I only have

Activex control

Disk Managment

Folder

How do I get certificates?

My OS is windows Xp. the link said for a windows 2000-based system. are they the same?

You will be unable to run sfc on an OS that isn't running (that's why I asked if you were able to get it to boot in safe mode). If you can't, you'll need to either replace winlogon.exe with one from your slipstreamed install media, or do a repair install (in that order).

I am sorry But I dont know what is slipstreamed media. I am not able to do a repair install though cause when I access the windows XP installation cd with SP2 given by dell, the only option i get is making a new installation(advanced).

So basically, I just copy a winlogon.exe from the CD and replace the one already in my computer. Right???

Ok I did that. But no change. When I rebooted, Same blue screen and error.

At this point, you'll have to do a repair installation.

I tried that. But that option is not available in the Setup. I even tried to make a new Installation(advanced) but it just quit half way. There is also no recovery console option in the setup probably because i havent installed it when XP was still running. What else can I do???
