Word crashes when replying to AOL email

It seems like the AOL tags are causing Word to crash when replying to an email.

The partner won't change the editor to use the Outlook editor cause he uses Word to edit his emails.

Does anyone know of a fix for this besides working around it? We are using Office 2003.
