Problems with Windows XP HomeEdition

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

My Toshiba Laptop came with Windows XP Home installed. I have had no problem for the past two years until a couple of days ago when I encountered the dreaded blue screen for the first time. With it came a number of problems, some of which I was able to fix but I have been left with the following unsolved mysteries.

1. System Restore comes up with only a blank white screen

2. Internet Explorer opens web pages but, on pages that have secure links, there is the little "Error on page" message in the bottom left hand corner of the page and the links will not work. For example, I can go to my Credit Union main page and all links work except the one that takes me to the login page for my account. On another website I tried to pay for a product using PayPal and the link to make the payment would not work. When I click on those links nothing happens.

3. When I try to open McAfee Security Center I get the "Internet Explorer Script Error" box but with no details. It asks me if I want to continue running scripts on the page but, no matter whether I click "yes" or "no" the only way I can get rid of the box is to close the McAfee page using Ctrl+Alt+Del

5. I am unable to validate my version of Windows, even though I have done it on a number of occasions in the past. When I run the validation script I get the message that it cannot give me a validation code.

Sorry if I have raised too many problems in one post but I am assuming that they may all have a common cause.
