tal ormanda
When I go to task manager I see like 5 svchost.exe is there suppose to be this many? I know they are for different things but couldn't it just be 1 svchost?
cluberti
No, that wouldn't be safe. Run "tasklist /svc" in a command prompt to see which services are loaded inside each svchost.exe instance. And yes, 5 is quite normal.
FAT64
As cluberti said, that's normal. You only have to worry if it says scvhost.exe, because that's a virus.
tal ormanda
C:\Documents and Settings\holenone>tasklist /svc'tasklist' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
wanzelbin
tasklist only works on XP. Have you got 2000?svchost is fine. It's a generic process that runs various dlls or executables as determined within various parts of the registry. If you want to see what's running within svchost on a non-XP platform you can try psservice.exe (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/psservice.mspx), but unless you've got problems I wouldn't bother.
