Formatting change upon printing (to printer, to mdi, print preview...)

I have a 14 page document, which includes bullets and numbering, as well as references and cross-references. It appears that upon printing my document (including normal printing, printing to mdi, print preview...), all cross-references assume a bullet format, or something, and what I originally saw prior to pressing 'print', is much different a split second after having pressed print. Copying the document into a new word application and trying to print it yields the same results.

Is there some way to prevent this from happening, or perhaps to 'lock' what I see on the screen prior to printing, so that what prints is what was seen on the screen prior to printing?

Thanks!
