Standby mode doesn't work

Greetings, everyone - when I go to START > TURN OFF COMPUTER and I select STANDBY, the computer goes into standby mode - but won't come out of it again. When I return, it refuses to come to life, so I have to unplug and re-start.

Any ideas what I can do to rectify the problem?

Does that with me too. I wonder if you have to enable hibernate or is that different from standby? I keep it turned off. I do remember this working in xp. I remember it was broke in win98/me.
