Magi_Sniper Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 I just bought a Media Center with Vista Upgrade Coupon off Newegg and i was just wondering, going from my current PC of Windows XP will i have to reinstall everything I already have on it? Or will the Media Center install notice that I have XP and just overwrite the essential Windows Files (Im running it off an NTFS partition so I hope I wouldnt need to reformat)
cluberti Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 If you get a version of Vista that can do an upgrade (and if you got the coupon, you will), Vista will upgrade Windows XP without killing application data if you start the installation from within Windows XP.
Magi_Sniper Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 I was more wondering if it would delete any data on my hard drive when I upgrade from XP Pro to XP Media Center, the Vista thing I found was cheaper with the Media Center than Media Center itself so I decided to buy it because it would allow me to have the Aero interface and hopefully DX10 (not exactly sure but it doesn't exactly matter, my X1600 isnt DX10 compatible)
cluberti Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Your x1600 will run Aero just fine, and no, it shouldn't delete your data if it's in your user account documents folders (your %userprofile% path). It'll change quite a few files in Windows and Program Files, but it won't touch your files.
Magi_Sniper Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 So it shouldnt touch anything in my C: besides the WINDOWS, and some of the Program Files? Sounds great, I didnt feel like moving Gigs of files in misc folders over to my brothers server just to install Media Center. Thank you so much for the insight.
