Forwarding email from work to an outside email address

I just purchased a Blackberry. I set up a Blackberry email address and now I want to forward my work emails to my Blackberry email address. I followed the instructions in "RULES" and after I set up the rule and ran it. It won't work. I read in the help notes that some companies won't let you forward email to an address with the @ sign in the address. Only to address within the network. So does this mean that something is in the server firewall preventing me from doing this? Can it be turned off? My ISP guy is dummying up on me. I just need somebody to tell me that this is the case and that it can be done.
