Hello all -

I have installed MS Server 2003 Standard Edition R2 on a Dell PowerEdge SC430 and plan to install Oracle 10g Database Server software on this machine for use as a small Database Server. When I say small I mean that only 2 domain users will connect to this machine daily. Another 4 will connect but only on an as needed basis. The users that do connect will only need to store data from queries that will be less than 1 MB. After the queries are run, the data from each query will be erased.

Here are the specifications of the Dell PowerEdge SC430:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 521 @ 2.8 GHZ / 1 MB Cache, 800MHZ FSB

OS: Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition

RAM: 2 GB DDR2, 522MHZ

Hard Drives: (2) 80 GB, SATA 1 inch, 7200 RPM Hard drives [mirrored]

External Hard Drive: Maxtor External 80 GB Hard Drive

UPS: APC UPS model Back-UPS LS 500

Environment:

This server will be added to a Windows NT domain.

There will be 6 users that will potentially connect to this server. However, as mentioned above, only 2 users will connect on a daily basis. The other 4 will connect on an Ad Hoc (as needed) basis.

Software:

The Oracle version is Oracle 10g Server (32 bit).

APC PowerChute Personal Edition 2.0.0 (server is connected to an APC UPS model Back-UPS LS 500 through a USB connection)

Symantec Anti-virus 10.0.1.356 (Server Version)

My questions are the following:

(1) I do not want this server to participate in any Browser Elections. When adding the Server to the domain, does this server need to be specifically setup so as not to participate in any Browser elections?

(2) Since this server will be a database server, should it be configured for use as a file server? What exactly would this entail?

(3) I have a Maxtor External 80 GB Hard Drive (Model Maxtor One Touch II) that I plan to use as a backup storage location. Are there any considerations that I should be aware of in configuring the backup software? Could I use a different backup software but still backup to the Maxtor External hard Drive?

Thanks
