able to ping but not browse in vista

ive search all the posts in here and google alike, with no avail. i did an upgrade install of vista beta 2 on my laptop. the ethernet drivers were unavailable but the wireless drivers were there. i was able to connect to my access point (router) and able to browse the router GUI. the connection says im connected to the internet and im able to ping google.com. however i cannot browse the web through IE7 or through Firefox. i have disable the protected mode and lowered the security settings as low as i can but still no surfing.

(i dont have any 3rd party firewalls installed. )

now had this been XP, i would simply conclude that this this is a winsock problem and fix it with lspfix.exe and winsockfix.exe ((both available at www.cexx.org ) but since it is vista, im a little intimidated by this small but important problem, and furthermore I'm not entirely sure the winsock is the same type or compatiblity. any help would be greatly appreciated.

( i have a low post count but i am a reader and a lurker and been a memeber for some time :-) )

thanks

no problems,

sounds like an interesting issues anyway :) now pinging internet sites you say is fine? how about releasing and renewing your IP and DNS cache, i know they are simple things but with vista simple seems to fix alot of things, also see if you can find a more specific driver for your wireless card (what model is it by the way) you can try a wireless hotspot or a friend or neighbors house to rules out if it is just a connection issue or not.

well as i said i am able to connect to my router's gui but not the internet (through a browser) pinging is fine full replies from google.com and the wireless card is an intel 802.11g (dont recall the exact model) just seems odd to me that it pings with a problem but not browsing. now one thing i have not tryed is browsing by ip address. if i am able to browse by ip address then it is definately a DNS thing. i will try that an post my results.

as far as the release and renew. did it so many times im blue in the face ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew did a netsh to flush the dns cache and also removed and reinstalled the wireless nic..

thanks for the quick reply :-)

ok new info:

i am currently connected from the vista machine to my XP machine VIA RemoteDesktop. so we dont have an issue with the networking side of things. im going to go out on a limb here and say that this is a winsock problem but that's where i need help. does anyone know if the windows XP winsock and the Vista winsock are the same? or are they completely different. my guess is since ipv6 is pushed so heavily in vista that it is entirely different, but i need clarification on this
