Need to check for spacing issues in dissertation but grammar won't

I have to submit my final review of my dissertation tomorrow and I wanted to go over the text to see if there were any spacing problems after periods. I have seen that you can do this through the grammar tabs. The problem is that when I go to the spelling and grammar tab everything under the grammar is shaded and I cannot check anything.
