XP home installed, minisetup & resealing

Recommended Posts

Alright. I work in a computer store, where we install lots of XP home, a few XP pro on the machines that we build.

I want to make a cd for home and a cd for pro, where we put the disc in, XP installs (with most updates) without any input, then asks for who to register the computer to, the product key, computer name, and user name (maybe time details for the hell of it ^_^ ).

I can make an unattend script fine (obviously using standard answers & key) and streamline updates in ok, but there are a couple of problems.

For XP Pro it's ok, I just run sysprep -reseal -mini and it asks away. But mini setup isn't an option in XP home.

So the problems are thus;

1. Is there any way I can get XP Home to ask who to register the computer to, the product key, computer name, and user name, like in the XP pro mini setup? Or is there even a way to create such a setup?

2. Can I streamline sysprep to install onto the HDD and run it with a runonce? Or (even bettter) run it from the cd with some sort of a %cdrom% pathname?

I really home there is someone who can help me with this. I have been searching for ages to do this and none seems to be able to help me with it.

As I understand M$ allows you to make a backup of the media. Would it not be easy enough to customise the winnt.sif file for each pc & then do an unattended install? This should not take more than say 5 minutes but would save you a whole lot of time feeding in the data & from being present in front of the pc when these input requirements come up.

You could give away the so created CD to the client & build goodwill as a bonus.
