I am configuring a domain on a brand new SBS-03 PE box. There are no other DC and DHCP is turned off on the router.

It is not configured properly even though there are zero error messages in the log (well, besides 6702). This error is on other, identical machines and the domain runs fine. I am unable to add a client, the error message says a domain controller cannot be found. When I do a "gettype" it shows the machine as a domain controller.

Here are my ipconfig /all settings:

host name: opc-server

primary dns suffix: opc.local

node type: hybrid

IP routing enabled: No

WINS proxy enabled: No

DNS suffix search list: opc.local

Ethernet adapter server local area connection:

connection-specific DNS suffix: (blank)

description: Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet

Physical Address: 00-15-C5-5E-60-18

DHCP Enabled: No

IP address: 192.168.20.21

Subenet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.20.254

DNS servers: 192.168.20.21

Primary WINS server: 192.168.20.21

On a properly configured server the program starts up on the server when the server's IP address is entered and selected to run on a networked computer(rather than being chosen to run the local machine). It must have something to do with the domain setup. I thought this might help. This machine has one NIC.

Does anything strike out to anyone?

from the machine you are trying to add to this domain can you ping this server?

is the computer you are trying to add in a domain already ? or part of a workgroup?

Fizban,

I cannot ping the server and it is on a workgroup.

The client is normally on a domain but I change it to a workgroup, remove it from the current intranet and plug it into the server's router which is completely removed from my domain.

The hardware setup is a Linksys wireless, plugged into the wall with the server taking up one port and my client using a second. The client is on a workgroup when I plug it in, I then right click my computer to add it to the domain and I get the error message, cannot find domain controller.

????? ideas ?????

make sure the IP on the client machine is one that is being provided by the DHCP on the DC, if not then there is connectivity issues, either the cables being used or the Router itself. do you just a plain old hub or swtich you could swap in to place for that router, i bet the problem lies there.

Well, I unplugged the router completely and put a Linksys switch in place of it. I know the switch works cause it was just running on our intranet. Do I need to configure an IP address on the switch? How would I do that, if possible?

One thing to note, when the default gateway was set to the same IP as the DC, I was able to add a client to the domain. That configuration was not ideal, so I gave the router it's own IP and now it does not work. Does that help at all?

>>make sure the IP on the client machine is one that is being provided by the DHCP on the DC, if not then there is connectivity issues<<

The IP on the client is NOT one that is provided by DHCP. Also, I am unable to do an ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew. It will release, but not renew.

Put the switch in place but I think that the system is still searching for 192.168.20.254 and nothing is coming back. Ideas?
