the3kgt2 Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 We are currently running a NT4 domain. We built a new server and installed 2000 server as a DC. We set it up using a different domain name and migrated all the NT4 users/passwords to this new server. Is it possible to simply take down the NT4 DC servers and rename the server 2000 DC to take its place? We want to just use this one 2000 server as the only DC in native mode.Would it be easier to just set everything up to the new domain name and have all the users rename their domain?
the3kgt2 Posted May 1, 2006 Author Posted May 1, 2006 I found out I can't rename it. So here's a thought:Would this be the easiest way to do this? Demote the server 2000 DC to a member server, have it join the NT4 domain, upgrade the BDC to 2000 and leave the PDC NT4, promote the 2000 DC member server to DC, wait 15 minutes for replication or force it, then demote the "NT4 BDC/2000 DC" back to a member server and then remove it? Correct?
fizban2 Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 if you are going to do a migration why not go to 2003?? going to 200 would be a stopgap method as it is already 6 years old, you would be better off going to 2003 ServerNT to 2003 migration
the3kgt2 Posted May 1, 2006 Author Posted May 1, 2006 We already have a server 2000 license. We are a small company and there is not enough of an advantage to purchase 2003 just yet.
fizban2 Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 ADMT2 is a migration tool that should help (google it), there are dozens of guides out there for moving from NT to 2000, shouldn't be hard to find one
