Connection Status dialog box doesn't appear

I've got an...unusual...problem with XP and I'm hoping there's someone out there who can maybe see something I'm missing.

When I open up network connections, select my active network connection (Local Area Connection), right-click it and click "Status" nothing happens.

Similarly, if I click "View status of this connection" in the explorer bar nothing happens.

But, if I drag a shortcut to the connection onto my desktop or put the status icon in the system tray and view the status from either of those (right click-> 'status'), it works as normal.

I would have tried a system restore but I honestly can't remember when I started having this problem...it's been for some time now. I've run out of ideas.

I'm running XP Professional Version 2002 (SP2).
