litewerx Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Any Ideas would be helpful,I tried to install an external modem to a serial port. Loaded driver first etc... Re booted and now it appears that the modem is trying to install in an endless loop. When I go to device mngr, it keeps recycling and when I'm quick enough to read it, it doesn't list any modems. when I try to reinstall anything. I get the message that I cannot install two devices at the same time. Tried to restore in safe mode, ran another virus scan, just can't find or stop the first install or remove it. again any helpful suggestion would greatly be appreciated. thanks.
cluberti Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I would first disconnect the modem from the serial port, then uninstall the modem software. I would then suggest going back to a restore point prior to the installation of the modem software, just to be safe, and then I would attach the modem to the serial port and reboot. When the device wizard pops up at that point (it should), install the modem driver manually with the CD in the drive (don't install the driver first).
litewerx Posted April 1, 2006 Author Posted April 1, 2006 Thank you but unfortunately, i also tried that along with cntl alt del and couldn't find the process running in the "end Task". It's a creative blaster external modem de5621 driver , I pulled off their site which has put me in this flat spin and I couldn't find anything on their support site. When I check my CPU usage, I get a rythmic spike that goes along with my Device mngr recycle. I need to end the loop of one of these things so I can try a restore or a complete deletion of a process that is driving me nuts. thanks again.
cluberti Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Try system restore from safe mode, that should get you back to stable.
litewerx Posted April 1, 2006 Author Posted April 1, 2006 Got it to come back, somehow it's back to normal. Thank you for your help Cluberti. Very very much appreciated.
litewerx Posted April 1, 2006 Author Posted April 1, 2006 sorry, spoke too soon. after reboot right back where i started only this time i can't get it to stop.
cluberti Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 If, after a system restore (removing the modem software) the issue returns with only the modem attached, I'd have to say the problem could then lie with the modem. If you do another safe mode system restore with the modem not attached to the machine, does the problem return after a reboot?
