Media Player Functionality

Is there any way to get more functionality when playing videos through the Media Center? Unless I'm missing something, the remote control has very limited functions, e.g. no video color or contrast settings, speed control etc. I find myself having to leave Media Center and opening Media Player 10 to have any of these controls available.
