Trying to open a file from MACX from XP is slow compared to file being

I place a object on a MAC OSX box (that has Window Sharing enabled) and map from a Windows XP box. When I try to open it, the size of the SMB reads are anywhere from 2 to 4 bytes chunks. If I take the same object and place it on a Windows box, it reads in 4KB chunks. Both client and servers are running on 100Mb / Full (confirmed). From the ethereal trace it looks like the Windows side is requesting the small chunks.

The object is actually is actually a made up of about 800 files (total size of about 120MB ... although its not reading all 120MBs of it). Our application reads the 1st 1Kb from each file as part of the Open. I would have thought there was something in our application except that its fine coming from a Windows box but not from a MAC box. The MAC is running 10.5.4 Its takes about 5 to 7 seconds (when coming from the Windows box). It takes about 35 to 40 seconds (when coming from the MAC box)
