captions and cross references

I wonder if someone could help,

I have found on a number of occasions that when I use captions for tables and figures in a word document and then cross reference them in the text of the document when I print (or save) the document a page break is inserted imediately before the crossreference in the text. This does not always serve to put the cross reference and the caption on the same page (which was my initial reasoning)

Any suggestions gratefully received
