Hi eveyone. I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with a problem I'm having.

First, I went through Zxian's troubleshooting guide.

The error message:

The page cannot be displayed

Explanation: There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Try the following:

Refresh page: Search for the page again by clicking the Refresh button. The timeout may have occurred due to Internet congestion.

Check spelling: Check that you typed the Web page address correctly. The address may have been mistyped.

Access from a link: If there is a link to the page you are looking for, try accessing the page from that link.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Technical Information (for support personnel)

Error Code: 500 Internal Server Error. The request was rejected by the HTTP filter. Contact your ISA Server administrator. (12217)

Condition:

I'm trying to connect to mp3 samples from varius websites through IE 6.0, but keep getting the previous message. Here are some of the sites I've tried to connect to mp3's through:

Buddhanet

Fourier's Song

Some Classical music

I don't seem to have a problem with .wav files, RealAudio, or flash sites.

I'm connected through a DSL connection that is porvided to everyone in our barracks (I'm in the Army). I don't know if our DSL is somehow configured using a proxy. I know it doesn't have a firewall. I have turned off Norton firewall and Microsoft firewall, no luck.

On Jan 06, 2006 I installed a Creative SB Audigy 2 sound card. I tried removing the card and uninstalling the drivers, then reconnecting. No luck.

I tried a system restore to Jan 08, 2006, no luck.

I used the trendmicro scanner that Zxian suggested. Found a few baddies, deleted them, but still no luck.

I went to the Toshiba (I am using a Toshiba Satellite notebook) and Creative sites, checked for outdated drivers. No luck there.

I googled the message, and the closest I could find to it was from the microsoft support center:

You receive a "The request was rejected by the HTTP Security filter" error message when you try to open a message from an Exchange Server that is published in ISA Server 2004

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a particular message or try to view a particular message in the preview pane in Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) 2003, you receive the following error message:

The page cannot be displayed

Explanation: There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed.

Try the following:• Refresh page: Search for the page again by clicking the Refresh button. The timeout may have occurred due to Internet congestion.

• Check spelling: Check that you typed the Web page address correctly. The address may have been mistyped.

• Access from a link: If there is a link to the page you are looking for, try accessing the page from that link.

Technical Information (for support personnel)• Error Code: 500 Internal Server Error. The request was rejected by the HTTP Security filter. Contact your ISA Server administrator. (12217)

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you publish a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer in Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004. This issue occurs if both the following conditions are true:• You try to open or preview an e-mail message that contains a high-bit character in the subject line. For example, you open an e-mail message that contains certain German language or Spanish language characters in the subject line.

• The Web publishing rule that you use to publish the Exchange Server computer is configured to block high-bit characters.

In this scenario, additional information about why the request was blocked appears in the Web Proxy log file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, configure the Web publishing rule so that it does not block high-bit characters. To do this, follow these steps:1. Start the ISA Server Management tool.

2. Expand ServerName, where ServerName is the name of your ISA Server computer.

3. Click Firewall Policy, click the Web publishing rule that you created to publish the Exchange Server computer for access by OWA users, and then click Edit Selected Rule.

4. Click the Traffic tab, click Filtering, and then click Configure HTTP.

5. Click to clear the Block high-bit characters check box, and then click OK two times.

6. Click Apply to update the firewall policy, and then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

When you configure HTTP filtering to block high-bit characters, URLs that contain characters from a double-byte character set (DBCS) or URLs that contain Latin 1 characters are blocked. This configuration may affect scenarios such as OWA publishing or Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server publishing. Additionally, this configuration may affect any scenario where a GET request passes a parameter that includes a character from a double-byte character set. You can configure HTTP filtering on a per rule basis for Web publishing rules or for access rules in ISA Server 2004. For additional information about HTTP filtering, search on "HTTP filtering" in ISA Server 2004 Help.

Note You may receive the message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section if you configure HTTP filtering to reject part of the HTTP request or part of the HTTP response. If you want to permit the request, review and reconfigure the HTTP filtering rule that affects the request.

APPLIES TO

• Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2004 Standard Edition

This didn't help me much since I'm attempting to connect to mp3's through IE 6.0; I don't use my Microsoft Outlook at all. I haven't even configured it.

So, am I missing something? I haven't had the opportunity to take my notebook to another internet connection and try from there, so I'm not sure if my droid is the problem, or my connection. Does anyone have ideas?

Thank you for your time!

First off... THANK YOU! You're one of the few new members who I've seen actually take the time to figure out the problem for themselves. Thank you.

Now that that's been said - have you tried right-clicking and saving the MP3 file to your computer?

Do you have any firewall or other security software installed?

I would try to use your computer on another internet connection, just to rule out your ISP. If it works elsewhere, then you know the problem isn't yours.

I'm sure that there's a solution to this. We've just got to find it. :)

Well, I figure if someone is going to take the time to help me out the least I can do is try to save them some time. :)

I have Norton Antivirus 2005 installed. I don't believe it comes with a firewall. The Windows firewall is disabled. I don't have any other 3rd party firewalls installed.

I tried to use Bearshare tonight, but it won't connect. I went through their support site, which had me d'load the latest version, no luck. Then it had me ping "www.bearshare.com". The request timed out. Bearshare suggested "general internet connectivity" problems.

I've tried right-clicking mp3 files, and get the following Windows Internet Explorer message:

Internet Explorer cannot download 'filename.mp3' from 'www.nomusicforyou.com'.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

My neighbor is home now, and I know he's able to download mp3's. He just got a new notebook, so he's been going crazy with it. Hopefully, I'll be back with more info soon.

Again, thank you for taking the time to help me out. I really do appreciate it!

Do you and your neighbour have the same ISP? If so, then that rules out any problems from their end of things.

Since bearshare seems to be having troubles as well, I don't think it's an IE issue. Just to be sure though, try downloading the files with Firefox or Opera (both freeware alternative browsers) to see if the same (or similar) error occurs.

Can you ping other websites without troubles? Google (www.google.com) or MSFN (www.msfn.org) are two that you can try to ping to see if you get the same problem.

You could also try uninstalling and reinstalling your network card. You can do this through the device manager:

Right-click My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager

Click on the plus sign beside "Network adaptors" to expand the tree. Right-click on each of the network adaptors that are listed and select uninstall. Once you've done this for all of the network adaptors, restart your computer. Windows should reinstall the drivers by itself after this.

Well, sorry about the late follow-up, but here's the deal:

Contacted the ISP for our barracks and spoke to a technician. He said the necessary ports for mp3s, ventrila, bearshare, etc have all been shut down due to security risk and recent moves by the military to "discourage" downloading music. Apparently, the Air Force recently sent esveral fourth-year cadets at their academy packing for downloading music. Ah well, its still free DSL.

Thank you for your help and your time Zxian. Your troubleshooting guide is extremely helpfull! Even though many of the topics in these forums are a bit above my head, I will continue to monitor them and try to find some more gems.

Again, thank you very much!

Glad to hear that it's not a problem with your computer. If you ever run into troubles again, feel free to ask here (after the usual self-troubleshooting of course... ;)).

Cheers!
