Trying to get Word back on my computer

 Hi,

This is a basic question. I had my Gateway computer repaired - new motherboard. It has XP Home edition on it. Everything is fine, except they did not put back Word, which I use for resumes, etc. The repair was done over a year ago, and I never bothered to battle with Gateway (and believe me, getting my warranty repair done was a nightmare - talking to their "support" people was like an LSD version of Green Acres [old sixties sitcom]) about it - Here is my question:

I have Microsoft Office XP Small Business Version 2002, I bought it when I purchased my computer, but never had it installed, it looks like it has 4 software modules on it, one of them being my coveted Word. Can I just install Word from this and none of the other modules on it with no harm to my computer? i.e It is not going to erase my XP operating system, and install Microsoft Office XP in it's place, for example? Not sure if Office XP is itself an operating system, or just some modules that can be installed. I see Outlook is on it, but I only want to install Word - can I do this?

It looks like when you insert the first CD it will take right off installing stuff once you accept the agreement.

Thanks for any help,

Harry

You'll be fine...Office is an application, Windows is an operating system.

When you install Office, just look for the Custom Installation button, which will show you a screen that lets you select what you want to install. You can configure it to only install Word, but it will still need some other random files for Office to work. Don't worry, it'll install all the necessary files for you...after that you should be good to go!
