Japanese characters

Hi. I cannot type in Japanese (Hiragana/Kanji) when I press th switch button. I tried to change setings in th Control Panel but it asks for a disk that I do not have as I bought the computer second-hand. Is there anything I can do or somewhere to download what I need? Thanks!
