Difficulty indexing with Word 2002

I have some chapters where I've selected for an index and the markings show {X} etc. I have been unable to remove these with either the show/hide button or control+shift+8(keyboard 8). In addition, when I tried to create the index, nothing happened but an additional note. I wonder if Word 2002 has been damaged somehow and must be reinstalled?

I had problems using Word for a 500 page book. For example, it would unpredictably introduce large amounts of white space. So I'm transferring Word files to Adobe PageMaker. There, the selections were used to make an index, with no problem.

Oh! I just noticed "enable email notification of replys." How convenient. I don't know how that works, but it seems the right sort of thing.
