scanning to word 2002

I have an hp officejet 7310 all in one printer.THe only problem I have with it is that when I try to scan a document to word it seems that word substitutes letters and #s for those that are actualy on the document.I have been told that it is the software from hp .I installed the same software on a laptop and attached it to the scanner.The document scanned perfect to word.I have absolutely no idea what setting in word I need to change.I was even willing to delete word 2002 and buy word 2003.Unfortunatly it seems that this wouldn't help as the computer would just install the same prefferences.

Any help and advice anyone could give would be much appreciated.
