iconkid Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 Before Windows XP was introduced, the practical limit for the size of desktop icons was 72 pixels (you could set it higher but nothing over 72 would "take"). Since Windows XP was introduced, the practical limit is now 128 pixels, and many iconists, professionals and hobbyist alike, include this size (as well as 96 and 72) in their multi-formatted icons. It's my contention that adding size formats above 64 pixels (unless you're making icons strictly for your own use) is mostly wasted work in that the number of people who have the icon size setting in the Appearance menu set to 64 is small, but the number of people who have it set to higher than that is miniscule -- and the highest setting? -- I'd say there's no one on the planet that actually has their icon size set at 128. I'd like to do a survey to see if I can confirm my assumptions about the popularity of various icon size settings. This isn't for nothing -- I'm the author of a desktop icon Web site and I don't include formats larger than 64 pixels because of my views on the popularity of them. This may change depending on the feedback I get in surveys on several forums. My guess of the final statistics is: 32 pixels - 88 per cent 48 pixels - 11 per cent 64 pixels - 1 (more than 1 per cent) 72 pixels - 1 (less than 1 per cent) 96 pixels - 0 percent128 pixels - 0 percentPlease help me to collect data on this. You don't need to make a post and it only takes a few seconds. Go to the following URL, enter your icon size in a form field and click "Submit."http://www.jeffs-icons.com/ISS/Icon_Size_Survey.html If you don't know what icon size you're using, you'll see instructions at the survey page on how to find out what your setting is. Later, I'll post here the cumulative results from the various forums on which this survey has appeared. If you decide to make a comment in the field provided, it would be most helpful to mention the size of your monitor, the screen resolution, CRT or LCD, Windows or Mac system. Thanks in advance to the people who contribute to this data.My Web site is: http://www.jeffs-icons.com
