Paint won't save a 256 bitmap

Hi, I'm new so I'm not quite sure if this belongs here, but anyway.

A while ago I was doing some stuff in paint that I had messed around with in PSP (Paint Shop Pro) I'm not quite sure what I did, but now paint refuses to save anything as a 256 bitmap file. I'm stuck with 24 bitmaps which is becoming a very big pain. I'm quite sure its also messing up any text I try to use in paint. For example, when I used to write things in paint each letter would be crisp and clear, but now all the edges are blurred making it hard to move the text around on a picture.

What did I do and how can I remedy this situation?
