Trouble with starting up now

[Computernovice]

My home computer is down. It started out as Virtual Memory is low. We have tried to restore to an earlier time but no luck. Now will not startup with going into safe mode.

When i check boot paths it says C;\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT= microsoft windows recovery console\cmdcons is not valid.

I have windows XP version 5.1.2600

HELP Life is no longer fun.
