aspi/registry problems following SP

Recommended Posts

I'm really struggling here. I have W98SP2 on a Dell. On the advice of someone I installed the unnoficial Service Pack 2.0.1 from this site: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

This overwrote my ASPI layer. Since then, the only way I can boot up is to boot up step-by-step and not run the registry checker. Otherwise, it thinks my ASP system files are out of step with the registry, and tries to restore one or the other.

This seems very smilar to the post at http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t37815.html.

I've tried all sorts of things, including "killing" and re-installing various versions of ASPI (as per that post), removing references to aspi from the registry, but nothing has worked. Please can you help? Surely there's a simple way of getting this back to normal? Unfortunately I do not know what flavour (if any!) of ASPI was there prior to this install.

All suggestions gratefully received.

I don't know what burning software you're using, but you need to know this:

if u use Adaptec/Roxio Easy CD Creator/Direct CD/etc AND Ahead Nero Burning ROM/Suite/etc AND Windows 95/98/98SE/ME, then u nedd to uninstall either Roxio/Adaptec ASPI drivers OR Nero ASPI drivers, they usually can't happily "coexist" on the same 9x computer.

Newest versions of ASPI drivers + info:

http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#CDR

Scroll down a bit to:

* Adaptec Standard ASPI Layer 32-bit Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 Drivers for

(E)IDE/ATAPI/SCSI CD-R(W)/DVD-R(W)/DVD-RAM drives (free, English)

Edit:

You can also install ASPI drivers manually, just extract them from the EXEs with Winzip, PowerArchiver or similar tool:

http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP

and then copy them over to overwrite the ones u already have.

To learn exactly where each file goes, open INSTALL.BAT in Notepad.

U might need to boot to native MS-DOS to replace some of these files.

Try first to install the newest one [ASPI 4.71.2]:

http://download.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi_471a2.exe

More info:

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/d...=aspi_471a2.exe

If that one doesn't work, then install the older 4.60:

http://download.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi32.exe

More info:

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/d...ekey=aspi32.exe

Hope this helps.
