BF1942 server on 2003 Server

Ok, I have Windows 2003 Server Enterprise edition installed on my server and am trying to run a Battlefield 1942 server off it. I can access everything from my computer to the server ok, and vice versa. The server has no problems with accessing the Internet.

After running the server (Which I did set local), I tried to connect to it and while I could see it in my server list, it failed to connect. Does anyone have any ideas why?

I had a similar problem when trying to setup a CS server on the same system. Everything seemed fine from the server end, but Steam could never find a local server.

Would I be better off using a NIX based operating system for my server? I don't need the advanced features of 2003 Server, but since I am a novice on Linux, I decided to go with something I felt more familiar with.
