I came across a friend that told me about a windows 98 service pack. i just blew him off when he mentioned it. I just didn't believe him. Has anyone come across this service pack. Does it actually do what it says it will do.

I just need a little reinsurance.

There was a Win98SP1. Its not available anymore, but that's okay, because it only included a few things (Y2K fixes, IE4, etc) that are either available seperately, or are outdated.

you can downlaod it here Windows 98 sp1

And the UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack can be downloaded here

1. If u would have used/installed this patch [wucsp.exe = linked from the URL u posted], u would know that this is only 1 out of 3 components that make up 98FE SP1.

If u check the URL at my site I posted above:

http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#SP1

u would notice that I provide links to all 3 SP1 components, and all 3 are available from MS servers, there is no need to go 3rd party [wucsp.exe u link to is located on PC World ftp server].

2. We, the "regulars" here at MSFN 95/98/ME forums, we all know [more or less] about Gape's SP 2.x. ;)

Gape's SP 2.x home page is here:

http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

He links to 3 different servers for d/l, and the 1 u mention happens to be MajorGeeks, who's webmasters happen to be buddies of mine.

I usually notify them when Gape posts a new SP release. B)

But the point was that at this time there is NO SP for Win98 FE (First Edition), at least not yet, until Gape, Petr and/or somebody else [myself included] decide to take up such time consuming project.

Hope this helps.

There is, there are two official and many unnofial realeses of service pack, I believe they integrate some on the second edition (SE). So they always talk about first edition updates (FE), you can find them here:
