elbuodne Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Hello. My computer broke and I had to get another one, and I hooked up my old hard drive as a slave drive. Now what should I do in order to get my old Outlook Express messages on to the new hard drive?Thank you.
dman Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 if using xp your mail and stuff is in this folder.<drive>:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{<long random characters guid>}\Microsoft\Outlook Expressin outlook express:file / import / messages / microsoft outlook express 6 / Import mail from oe6 store directory / browse to folder above and import the mail.win98 is under windows\application data\identities
elbuodne Posted May 26, 2005 Author Posted May 26, 2005 Thanks a lot, but that didn't bring up my old messages. I did those steps and it imported, but it only brought back one message from a year ago into my outbox. I noticed on my old hard drive I have a file at:G:\Documents and Settings\Nick Weiss\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlookcalled Outlook.pst, and it is over 100 megabytes in size. That is most likely where my messages are, so do you have any other suggestions?
dman Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Are we talking about Outlook Express or MS Office Outlook? Outlook Express has files named Inbox, outbox, sent items, etc. with ".dbx" extension. Outlook has ".pst" extension. Did you use MS Office Outlook on your old computer and now are using Outlook Express? If you formerly used Office Outlook, choose import/outlook and point it towards the folder your .pst file is in.
elbuodne Posted May 27, 2005 Author Posted May 27, 2005 I'm not sure which verison I was previously using. Sorry. For some reason when I go to that folder when in import it says "No messages can be found in this folder..."Thanks so much for helping me.
dman Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 You must have been using Office Outlook if you have .pst file.In Outlook Express "import", make sure you choose "Outlook", not "Outlook Express". I know this works when Office Outlook is installed on the computer, but not sure if you can browse to the .pst file if it is not installed. If not you may need to install Office Outlook. That will import it for sure. Be sure to make a backup copy of .pst file!!! should have said that first.
