RPCRT4.dll was not found

I am trying to fix my XP home after spyware problems on an Inspiron 1000.

I now get a blue screen with the error

STOP: c0000135 {Unable To Locate Component}

This application has failed to start because RPCRT4.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

This has occurred after reinstalling c_1252.nls and c_437.nls from i386 on the Operating System restore disc per Microsoft article 830088.

The restore disc is in the drive but in the blue screen condition I can no longer access it. About all I can do is power down the computer. At start up Windows loads and then displays the error.

Sorry for stating the obvious, but have you checked if the DLL does exist?

Thanks for your reply. I'm sure RPCRT4.dll either is not there or corrupted. But it is not loading from the XP recovery disc in the repair process and I don't know how to get beyond the blue screen to further troubleshoot.

Attempting to start in Safe Mode gives the same blue screen.

Set your BIOS setup to boot from the CD before looking for a hard drive. Your XP Recovery CD should have a Recovery Console (the repair option) which should be able to rename the dll back for you like DOS.

also... if you can get into windows at all normally, try running:

sfc /scannow

from the Command Prompt.

Can't remember if this works in Safe Mode but if you cant get into windows normally, you could try it.

Also, if you have access to another machine (you must have or you wouldn't be posting), have a look at PEBuilder (search Google - its free and legal ) and you could use that to see if the file is missing and possibly restore it via this CD that you can create.

If all else fails, before formatting use BootItNG to create a new partition and install a fresh install of WinXP. Make sure you set the new partition active and hide the old partition while installing so the new install won't mess up anything. Then you can unhide the old partition, boot up into the new install of WinXP and access the old partition to fix the problem.
