maverick1983 Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 i have a couple computers and one server runnig linux without a cd drive, now i want to install 2000 server but i don't have a drive at hand, how can i facilitate a setup over the network? the server is a compaq with a pxe nic. I was thinking of finding a freeware pxe server or something cus i don't have dos drivers either. However i haven't found any server and have no idea how to do it otherwiseany help is apreciated greetzmav.
Martin Zugec Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 Quite simple - on linux or any other computer create share, copy install cd to this share, on new server boot to dos, activate network connection and run winnt.exe. If you need any help on this, just ask
maverick1983 Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 ok so i have a share of the cd, so i guess i'll have to use something like win98 boot floppy, but how do i set up networking in dos?
Martin Zugec Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 Try to have a look at nu2.nu (network boot floppy)...
maverick1983 Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 i can ping the computer but when i want to connect to the share it says host not found
Martin Zugec Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 Try connecting using IP address instead of PC name
maverick1983 Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 yes tried that, didn't help dns, gateway ip and subnet all are filled in. Share has full access
maverick1983 Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 ok tried another computer and share is working now thx for the info!
Martin Zugec Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 I am always glad to see more people using network installations
maverick1983 Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 been using it for a longer time, just not from dos i don't believe in dos any more!
Martin Zugec Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 I like DOS (as installation inicialization) - I got few advanced techniques in my cd, including autodetection of NIC drivers etc...
maverick1983 Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 just use a automated cd installation normally, but can't use it on a computer without a drive
Martin Zugec Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 Network is better I got small boot medium (around 800KB, FDD or CD), it is working fully unattended, technicians just select what they want to do (e.g. Standart installation, or they can use custom, where they select server, OS, language version etc.)... Now I am also using PXE installations (it will launch the same boot medium, but without GUI)
